Your "Working Mannequin" blogspot just caught my interest and I am wondering if you might be able to help me with something I'm working on.

I have this particular style of pants that I'm trying to recreate and start a small business out of it. I am looking to work with some local Austin seamstresses to do the cut and sewing. I have the pattern and original pair of pants that I got the style from and am going to grade/mark them for sizes extra-small through extra-large.

I'm currently looking for somewhere to source the right types of fabric and, as soon as I have these things in line, I will be looking to have a couple samples made and eventually move forward with an order of around 60 items, to start out.

I'm very interested in the business model you put forward on your blog that uses readily available independent contractors.
Please let me know if you are still in this line of work and can help me in any way.

School district Board of Trustees presentation on middle school students and computer ownership . . . beginning in Round Rock

How do you increase computer ownership among middle school students in our current economy? How important is it given the state of our education system in America? How can we profess to encourage, involve and increase our children's commitment to their own education if many of them continue to disconnect with the cyber world of knowledge and information as soon as they leave the school classroom? How do you create an income generating opportunity for computer hobbyists, computer technicians, electrical engineers and others?

This is my two-prong proposal to school district Board of Trustees and Superintendents. It is a local, regional, state and nationwide proposal. The proposal involves no cost to these school districts. Rather it is a grassroots partnership between community citizens and local vendors and resellers. Along with community and local vendors and resellers are nonprofit agencies. It is the role of these nonprofits whose mission is the improvement of the well-being and education of our children who compensate those who build or setup these computer systems. This partnership makes laptop/desktop computer ownership among middle school students a real possibility for children who have little hope of owning a computer.

The city of Round Rock Texas estimates 95% of its homes have internet access. The school district estimates 80% of homes have a computer. However, the district acknowledges this figure drops dramatically when applied to middle school students, specifically. Some school district issue laptops year round for their high school students. This is commendable.

Whether computer hobbyists, computer technicians and others who build or setup (at the child's home or local churches) are motivated by economic or altruistic reasons this two-prong proposal is an effective and efficient response to four realities affecting middle school children.

1. The gaps in these numbers reveal an unacceptable reality for our middle school children.

2. At-home computer & online technologies do not translate to access for children necessarily.

3. Ownership of school-issue laptops does not bridge the gap of a three month summer break.

4. This technology gap leaves children behind at the top of the poverty list in America.

Thus far I have presented my proposal to the Round Rock ISD, Georgetown ISD with Austin ISD upcoming in January 2012 and Pflugerville ISD in February 2012. I am calling on these Boards or their Superintends to write a letter of support on my behalf to their nonprofit partners. All nonprofit funds are for to compensate those citizens of the community who build and/or setup laptop/desktop computer systems for the middle school students.

Our cities, small and large, will soon see increasing numbers of returning military men and women. The opportunity for them to connect and contribute while earnings some income may go a long way towards their transition back into the community, their families and their own school children.

If you are a computer hobbyist, computer technician, electrical engineer or other or know someone who would like to make a difference among middle school children; I want to hear from you.

Computer ownership among Round Rock middle school children

Those of you who have browsed my blog or read my blog header know I have a dual track: One track is apparel independent consultants, the other is technical independent consultants.

I received this information from a knowledgeable school employee today concerning my project to create computer ownership among middle school children and a source of revencue for technical independent consultants. My question: What number/percentage of Round Rock middle school children do not own a home desktop/laptop computer? Here's his reply. Read my comments following his reply. gt

Unfortunately, I don't have access to that information. However, we have

discussed a "Bring Your Own Device" project in the school district and have

estimated that 25-30% of the students may have access to personal

technology devices (i.e. notebook computers, netbooks, tablets,

smartphones, etc.) that could be used at school. That number may vary by

geographical location within the district. For example, I would expect the

percentage to be higher for Walsh MS than for Chisholm Train MS or C.D.

Fulkes MS. I would also expect the percentage to be higher at high school

than at middle school and for middle school to be higher than for

elementary schools.

Given the high tech community that is represented by Round Rock ISD, I

would make at educated guess that approximately 80% of the students in

RRISD have access to technology in their homes. In your question below,

however, you asked how many middle school students own a desktop/laptop

computer. This implies that even if there is a computer in the house that

a student could use, do they have their own computer. If this is truly

your question, then I think my estimate of 80% would drop considerably.

I have shared this bit of information with two computer/parts vendors whom I keep in my information loop. The fact is children are at the top of the poverty list in America. Lets not mistake computer ownership or web access by the parents for a full, meaningful access by the child for his/her school work. Even a conservative figure of 20% computer ownership among children is non-acceptable in a high tech community like Round Rock. One can only imagine how much greater this number might be in other communities.

It is not likely that children in the 20% bracket would own a smartphone, notebook or other similar devices. Furthermore, these devices precisely because of their high mobility and their social and entertainment use are not likely to be used by children for school work at home.

As I have described to the two vendors my business model involving independent consultants can efficiently, effectively and profitably create computer ownership among children as well as generate revenues among independent consultants who build these systems.

Yes, we know a new complete computer system can be purchased for under $300. Really. The reality is that amount of disposable cash is not what in the pocketbooks of the 20%. However, a creative model which allows for these children to obtain a computer whether a desktop or laptop can make the difference.

How to turn $6 into $100

Do you see opportunity in our current economy? I do. Furthermore, I want to show you specifically how you, an Apparel Consultant, can rise up in this economy.

The numbers in the Introduction to the article Behind the label: inequality in the Los Angeles apparel industry by Edna Bonacich, Richard P. Applebaum (2000) are a bit old. The principles and application are quite real and relevant. These numbers represent what I have maintained for the past ten years as not just a sob story of bitterness and unemployment, but of hope and opportunity for Apparel Consultants. I use the terms Apparel Consultant, Independent Consultant and Consultant to refer to the individual women and men who have the Knowledge, Skills and Experience (KSE) to generate at-home revenue for themselves in apparel.

The article uses a simple breakdown involving the production and sale of a single dress for $100. You can read just the Introduction (The Return of the Sweatshop) for yourself. The short of the story is about the $100 revenue generated by a dress and the $6 which goes to the worker who made the dress.

How do you, an Apparel Consultant in the Round Rock/Austin central Texas area turn $6 into $100 in the Prom 2012 market?

First, I EMPHASIZE my use of the dollar figures from the article is strictly for the purpose of making an illustration. Second, the dollar figures from the article are for an apparel worker, an employee of a manufacturer. Nobody has any business dictating to an Independent Consultant his or her fee. Independent Consultants are not employees.

During 2011 I have been in contact with PTA and other Round Rock ISD school officials on behalf of Independent Consultants. What I have been proposing to these parties is a Prom Dress 2012 raffle. All, 100% of the proceeds of the raffle to would go to whoever conducts the raffle, either PTA or the school district. All interested students would have the chance to win a professional dress pattern purchased by the Independent Consultant. The Consultant's fee (which is set by the Consultant) would be posted publicly at the school campus for all students to know the cost before the drawing. The winner will purchase the fabric in the color of their choice, meet with the Consultant, agree on method of payment and delivery date of the dress.

It is this way that a person who would have earned $6 as a worker can turn those earnings into $100 ($150?, $200? $300?) or whatever he/she sets as their Consultant's fee.

Every year I get an earlier start. This time I am getting a whole 1 year head start on Prom 2012.

I am looking for a core group of 10 talented, client-oriented women and/or men in Round Rock. If you possess the apparel skills of working from a prom dress pattern I would like to meet with you. I will present the custom Prom dress service to all five Round Rock high schools in early January immediately after the Christmas holiday break. If the number of interested responses, for example, in Austin, Georgetown and other towns is good the same can be done in those towns and school districts separately.

The plan is to raffle free dress patterns with the consultant contact information. The dress patterns are for $100, $150 dress, for example. These dress prices represent the consultant's fee. The consultants set their own fee. The schools will administer the raffle and keep all raffle funds. The students will purchase the fabric of their choice. (I want to approach JoAnn's in Round Rock to bring them on-board.) The winner of the dress pattern will meet the dressmaker with pattern and fabric. The consultant takes measurements and creates the dress. The girl picks up her dress. The consultant collects his/her fee. The entire fee belongs to the consultant.

Purchase of dress patterns (such as Simplicity, McCall's) is the responsibility of the consultants. I will deliver the patterns to the schools in January.

This is what is most important for me: 1) Bring together the core of 10 apparel consultants, 2) The consultants see the effectiveness and profitability of a local apparel network for themselves, and 3) The core group decides to move ahead with other apparel opportunities.

A place of meeting will be determined as the group forms. It may be in the FREE open air setting of a park. It may be a classroom in your church if you can arrange it.

For Apparel Makers, ‘Challenge’ Is in Style

Apparel makers and some retailers could face a less-than-happy 2011.

That may seem at odds with the strength of this year's holiday sales season. But supply constraints, rising production costs and choppy consumer demand suggest it will be trickier than Wall Street currently expects for many companies to increase profit margins in 2011.

Consider sportswear giant Nike Inc. whose third-quarter results last week beat profit and revenue estimates. Despite this, its shares fell after the company warned of "strong gross-margin head winds for the next few quarters." Nike put the pressure down to higher labor, cotton and transportation costs, plus the recent strengthening of the U.S. dollar. Those aren't concerns unique to the sportswear giant; they are shared across the apparel industry. Rapid development in China, the "workshop of the world," is now pushing up global production costs, reversing a decadeslong trend.

To make matters worse, companies' typical response—raising prices—is proving rather difficult at the moment. The average selling price of apparel in the U.S. has actually fallen for 10 of the last 11 months, according to Piper Jaffray, even though the cost of imported apparel per unit is up about 1.5% year-on-year.

The profit squeeze will likely worsen as the year progresses due to the long lag between merchandise orders and their arrival in stores. The run-up in cotton prices is a particular nuisance and is just starting to feed through the supply chain. Short supply plus strong Asian demand has more than doubled prices from the mid-70 cents per pound range seen this past summer to nearly $1.60 now for March delivery.

As a result, 2011 estimates for many apparel makers "to me are too aggressive from a margins and earnings perspective," says FBR Capital Markets analyst Eric Tracy. Nike at least can use its strong brand and global heft as a bargaining chip with suppliers. This may also make it better able to raise prices for customers. Smaller companies like Gildan Activewear Inc., Quiksilver Inc. and Volcom Inc. probably won't be as fortunate.

Apparel executives were hoping these cost pressures would prove fleeting. Now, following in Nike's footsteps, more will probably have to let investors know they are in for a tough slog.

Prom Dress Network Invitation

It will be here sooner than you think again! The biggest annual extravanganza among teenage girls. I am talking about Prom.

Once again, I wonder how many of the enormous talent pool of dressmaker consultants are ready to take advantage of the opportunity. I wonder how many will miss out again.

This is my invitation to all interested independent consultants and independent prom dress retailers to do something about it.

Before you reject this invitation because of the cost let me clear that up right now.

It costs you nothing.

Why is this free? Because I am more interested that people see the profit potential of the network for themselves rather than showing them charts and graphs.

KSE in a challenging economy

They are two people with whom I work. They do not know each other. They do know computer technology.

Despite neither one having traditional academic credentials they possess what I call KSE, the Knowledge, Skills and Experience people acquire and amass over their years of employment. Their KSE affords them a confidence and competence such as computer build, (and networking) diagnostics, repair and more.

Acquiring KSE

He immersed himself in every tutor and mentoring opportunity alongside engineers and technicians to acquire much of his technology know-how during his years as a Dell employee. She absorbed hers through her Electrical Englneer big brother. He, for his seeming amusement and her utter frustration, would dismantle her computer for her to reassemble and reconfigure. It was a few years before she would reflect and appreciate the gift he gave his litle sister.

Networking with buddies/working from home

It would not be difficult, he says, to connect with a couple of his tech buddies to take on some technology projects. Sound familiar? The problem, he explains, is finding the clientele to sustain their business enterprise. Sound familiar? She would love nothing better than to be able utilize her tech skills to supplement the family income from the comfort of their home with their children. Sound familiar?

Innovation in a challenging economy

Business technology needs versus family economic needs are not totally unrelated, folks. Aren't you amazed by some of the innovative sales ideas which have emerged with our challenging economy? Can you recall ever hearing a car dealer encourage people to buy a new car and the dealer would make the payments for a period of time if the buyer lost their job? Or, you can bring that car right back without any problems! Lets not foolishly assume there aren't conditions with these offers, but the point to note is the innovation of business to meet their sales demands while meeting the economic needs of the family.

The independent Enterprise Network model

The Independent Enterprise Network model is the meeting point between business technology needs and family economic needs. Any skepticism could be no less foolish than those who fail to understand the car dealer's offer. Whatever skepticism you have about the IE-Network may be affecting your profitabilty and ability to recruit consultants and take on technology projects. Something else about our challenging economy. Have you noticed how business turns to the small areas it had ignored or overlooked in the past? The whitebox/whitebook market remains an ignored, overlooked area of profit potential.

A good practice

Business owners rely on their shop, floor and store managers to make the best decisions to enhance and constantly build their profit margins. Are you sure they're not ingnoring or overlooking areas of profit potential riding out the economy while riding on the security of a paycheck from you? A good inventory audit practice is check your stock and your business management.

Best Buy Offering $197 HP Laptop on Black Friday

The Best Buy offer is a great deal.

However, even at $197 it's way over budget for much of the untapped no-brand, whitebox/whitebook computer buyer in America. Whitebox/whitebook is the industry term which refers to generic desktop/laptop computers. Still, Best Buy does show the resourcefulness of big business to market their product.

My repeat efforts to present the IE-Network model to a major computer manufacturer have been ignored. Yet, their desire and efforts to break into the whitebox market were similarly ignored by that same market.

The whitebox market requires no less resourcefulness by at-home independent consultants, resellers and retailers. Certainly, the market is no less accessible for them then it is for major retailers and manufacturers.

Now, for the past several months, my focus has centered on computer component retailers and resellers. Any other time I would, grudgingly, understand such quickness to brush-off a network idea not in their business strategies manual.

But, in this economy who can afford to continue with the same mindset and attitude of business as usual?

The same IE-Network model allows major retailers and manufacturers as well as independent consultants and small retailer/resellers to penetrate and profit in the whitebox/whitebook market. This economy has brought out some previously unheard of marketing schemes. Who ever heard of car dealers telling car buyers: "Bring it back if you lose your job"?

Of course, IE-Networks are quite capable of providing much more than desktop and laptops for small business. Furthermore, small business is able to pace their spending. There's no need to lock into extraordinary budgeting structures. Rather, they simply absorb these developmental expenditures into the daily business operations and as profits permit.

Sewing Machine sales soar

I just wonder how these sewing machine sales affect old figures. A few years ago I corresponded with a Home Sewing Association (defunct, 2007) staff member. She confirmed the HSA information on home sewing figures. Namely, that there were over 35 million people who sew in their homes.

The HSA would not make any claims as to who was doing the sewing for profit or pleasure. Their sound estimates were on the basis of overall sewing machine sales in America. Although sewing machine manufacturers were unwilling to provide specific figures so the HSA, I believe, may have compiled the data from retailer sales.

I was especially pleased to learn of this figure from the HSA. What pleased me about it was that it supported one of my own conclusions. Namely, that there are vast numbers of people who have acquired, and in some instances amassed, a great deal of Knowledge, Skills and Experience in the production of apparel. Some of these are the same talented individuals whom the government categorizes as "non to low-skilled workers". Others include people who have studied the craft (my apologies if that is not the prefered term) through school even to obtaining a higher education degree in the field of apparel. Still others to be included are those who have an inbred know-how, a knack, which seems as easy and natural as breathing to them while others need to work diligently to attain.

The IE-Network model is all about bringing together those talented individuals, as local independent consultant/contractors, with local independent apparel retailers for fulfillment of their apparel production, design and related needs . . . for profit. Other possible target areas for networkers include prom dresses, soccer team uniforms and more.

Building in the Whitebox Market

If I didn't know a mouse from a motherboard do you think you could still send me out with a short grocery list to show the folks at Goodwill Computers, Discount Electronics, Altex? An additional simple instruction: Do not take the electronic part out of its protective bag or risk damaging it by Electro -Static Discharge.

Those two short simple steps are essential to 1) you tapping into the whitebox/whitebook market, and 2) enabling low-income and other consumers to acquire their own custom-made computer. Reality check here: The computer industry giants would love to, but lack the creativity to reach this vast, multi-billion dollar market.

While it is possible to buy a new low-cost computer for as little as $500 the reality is that is way out of reach for many Americans. How do you enable them to buy it and creative a source of revenue for yourself?

The next time your co-worker or neighbor has $10 to spare send him with grocery list in hand for a mouse and keyboard. Then, you guide him through this process every month or as often as he has discretionary funds adding every purchase to his parts list. Leave the pricier items for the last. He stores all parts until at the end of 8 months or so he has all the parts and is ready for you to assemble it.

Perhaps you may no longer be in the frame of mind to build computers or you're going on vacation. What does he do? He takes his parts inventory list to another network tech or computer hobbyist who is willing to build it maybe for even more than your fee. You both agree on a fee and your neighbor has his new computer.

After all numbers are tallied your neighbor sees he paid $750 for a computer he saw at the corner reseller for $500. Did you rip him off? No. The only thing he paid directly to the tech was the agreed upon assembly fee.

Here's the leverage dynamic of the IE-Network over all manufacturers, retailers, resellers, credit, down payment and layaway plans. The manner in which he has purchased his components might total more than the store unit, but he was able to absorb the cost into his daily living expenses. He's not going to find that plan anywhere else.

The question for you to answer: How much of a clientele among friends, neighbors, co-workers or business clients you are able to assist and generate income with their piecemeal computer component purchase? Your clients may come through word-of-mouth or the IC-TechNetwork.

As is true of individuals so too of small businesses. If small businesses have someone who is able to send them with grocery list in hand to acquire their new computer systems, networking components and servers piecemeal, that is, one component at a time without it being an economic burden they would be among those who mange their business the smart way.

The problem for individuals and small business is not that they are unable to purchase components. Their unanswered question, up to now is, why bother with component purchase if I don't have the time or know-how to build it? Clearly, and particularly for small business, there might be bigger things of interest and need beyond desktops and laptops. Having a local independent consultant network which individuals and small businesses can tap for their technology products and services needs is no small matter.

How small of a piece of the multi-billion dollar whitebox market would be big enough for you?

Every year I meet people with their story of great, exceptional talent without the means or the know-how to convert that talent into revenue.

Every year Prom comes around at the local high school.

Every year girls scramble to find the perfect prom dress. Most likely they end up settling for something less than perfect either in terms of fabric, style, color, size, fit or cost.

Every year, at least for the past three years, I have called the same talented people to come together as a independent network of designers to provide a needed service for these seasonal clients, and _ create income for themselves and their families.

Every year the apparel industry offers these young ladies the standard one-size-fits-none off-the-rack dresses.

Every year, for the past several years, the industry has continued to its doors on the creative talent of apparel makers who are now employed at McDonald's, Walmart or 7Eleven.

Every year there are young ladies who opt for the $100 Prom Dress specials who then spend an additional $60 for alterations.

Lets suppose mom and daughter shop for and buy fabric and pattern. Lets say they spent $40. They contact you through word-of-mouth or the IE-Network and retain your services. You settle for the agreed service fee of $10, 30, 60 or $80? Your fee is yours and nobody else's business.

If mom and daughter spent $120 dollars for a dress to their personal satisfaction in terms of fabric, style, color, size, fit and cost with your personal service I would say that is a mutually satisfying and profitable relationship for all.

Now, the only question is how many clients are you willing to take on to deliver total customer satisfaction. Although school district adiministrations and individual campuses are not likely to (Yes, I have tried) allow the exposure of students to a community member nonetheless there are eager, willing entreprenuers on campus who would not miss out on the opportunity to collect Prom Dress orders on campus and deliver to you for a fee.

Every year is now. This is your call to get ready. Will you do it or miss out again?

Taken for granted

Do you own car? A computer? Shirts? Dresses? Does your house have light bulbs?

Look around at all the things you own or use in your everyday life and which you take for granted. I do not mean the practical, valuable use of those things. Rather, I am thinking of the struggle those people went through in pursuit of their dream and did not give up. As a result you and I now enjoy the fruits of their labors.

I think of Thomas Watson, IBM founder, how his own family snickered at his mention his clock and tabulation machine manufacturer would some day be the biggest in the world.

I think of Michael Dell, alone in a tiny kiosk at a trade show he managed to squeeze in because of a vendor's cancelation at the last hour. Those same engineers from across the way would eventually get past their snickering to seek employment with the young men just two or three years later.

I think of Thomas Edison who went through over more than a thousand light bulbs before he finally got the lasting results. Do you suppose all who knew him rallied their support behind him over such a insane idea as creating a light fixture. And even if he were to make a light bulb how was that going to earn him money? By selling it? Who would want to pay for such a useless thing?

Walt Disney endured the ridicule of his wife who mocked "whose going to want come and pay to see dwarfs at a park".

One thing to note is these individuals, whether young or old, had their families in mind primarily and secondarily those who would benefit and be blessing through their work. I do not believe any of these individuals set out to amass a fortune. It was merely a by-product of their dream come true.

I have often stated I am not a prophet nor the son of a prophet. Certainly, I am not an economist or the son of an economist. The point is that while I may be neither I, like anyone, can state my piece. As I see it, we have heard too many instances of voices who cried out warnings only to be ignored. After 911 we learned of individuals who cried out about some unusual and suspicious activities prior to that day of infamy only to be ignored. A few lone voices cried out about the extremely fiscally risky and dangerous activities in our banks and Wall Street and they too were ignored. As a result catastrophic events unfolded which cost many lives and ruined other people's financial future. People lost much or all of their savings. Whatever savings remained diminished in value considerably.

I'm sure there are actually people who stuff their money in mattresses and pillows rather than trust the banks. The sad thing about that is that while they may not lose their money their money can lose its value.

There are a few things which 1) can not be taken from the individual, 2) do not lose their value regardless of the economy, and 3) may even increase in value. Most recently, I have described this personal wealth as your intellectual property. I know that's a term usually found in the technology world. However, the Knowledge, Skills and Experience (KSE) you have acquired and amassed over the years are your personal wealth, your intellectual property and is one of those few things mentioned above.

KSE is what employees acquire and develop and which enables them to do a job for their employer and to do it progressively better, more efficiently and more economically which produces greater profits for the employer. Some people never realize, never assess, their personal wealth. They never think how they can invest it for their own gain. Some who think they would like to use or invest their KSE for their own gain do not know how. Still others who do use their KSE are rarely ever able to do more than have a job of their own. Finally, others attempt only to fail and return to the regular job.

I have been crying out for the past several years the virtues and good economic sense of Independent Enterprise Networks as the perfect means for you to invest your KSE in the development of your own enterprise.

Have you been listening?

Even while you remain unemployed your KSE remains in your possession. It was not lost with your job. Your KSE has not lost value. On the contrary, it continues to increase in value because some of the same employers and small businesses who could no longer afford to keep you on payroll would gladly buy your services as an independent Constractor/Consultant, not an employee. Employees on payroll represent a drain on companies, a liability risk and a need to provide steady hours of work for them.

The IE-Network model has its local roots, but can quickly expand to regional than statewide than interstate business. You, if you wish, need never leave the comfort of your local stomping grounds. A local group of individuals who bring together their wealth resources, that is, their KSE for investment in the IE-Network, represent an attractive option for employers and businesses eager to seize the opportunity to move forward.

There’s an interesting contrast between the apparel and computer manufacturing industries in these short articles. I have listed the important points in both articles for an easy comparison. A manufacturing facility in Texas. That's one I've heard in conversations with seasoned former apparel workers. I've read it in the Austin American-Statesman, among others. Up and coming couturiers in Austin search for that elusive manufacturing facility. If it exists it's a well-kept secret.

Secret

What is not a secret is the extraordinary number of displaced apparel workers. How about the fact Texas, formerly the nation's number one in apparel manufacturing, is number one in the number of displaced apparel workers. I have a good friend who is an extremely talented and knowledgeable individual. Her experience ranges from production worker to trainer to supervisor to the wheeling and dealing for fabric that once bustled back and forth between the US and Mexico border. "If a manufacturing facility were to open in Austin it could be fully staffed with 500 workers in one month" she says. I won't argue with her. I believe she is right.

Seedlings

However, it would probably not be more than a month before the cost of operations, including labor, machinery and materials, would drive the manufacturer (as well as contractors and subcontractors) to squeeze "more for less" from (low) paid workers in order to accommodate suppliers and retailers. Therein are the seedlings for sweatshops, outsourcing and a product dubbed by disillusioned consumers as, "one size fits none". I do not wish to be a party to such.

A virtual apparel manufacturing facility

The cyber world of the Internet has revealed you do not necessarily need to be physically present to have a virtual experience of something in your senses. The automotive and real estate industries have marketed successfully many a sale by providing their clients the opportunity of a virtual experience of the car or home of their choice before they buy it. It's not a stretch to envision a virtual apparel manufacturing (VAM) facility without the existence of a plant in the conventional sense. Do you necessarily need 500 people working multiple shifts in one physical locale to create an apparel experience for you?

What prevents a VAM facility from taking root in Texas? Old thinking.

Independent apparel producers and independent retailers can have a face-to-face, personal and dignified, mutually beneficial business relationship. It's more than "someone in the 500" or a worker abroad whose gender, age and working conditions are unknown to you.

The elements

The elements of a VAM facility include: a home. Throughout homes in Texas (and America) are individuals experienced as pattern-makers, cutters, sewers, quality control and more. The popular credit card commerical comes to mind:

Conventional apparel manufacturing in America: costly
"Conventional " overseas : cheap*
"Virtual " America : priceless *

America has seen what "cheap" got us in pet food, human food, children's toys and apparel all in 2007. There are more than a few who would take up the opportunity of using their resources to create an at-home income as being priceless. No one individual is likely to possess, or would want necessarily, to "do it all". Each one contributes to the process as they wish, are able and agreed upon by business parties. What is important to understand is the skills that populated the production floor are in homes in your community.

Networks

How do individuals in a VAM facility come together? The are brought together through Independent Contractor Networks to "staff", not so much a "facility", as a network.

Networks create an environment of interaction for retailers and apparel producers
Networks create a constant growing source of talent retailers may need to meet apparel demands
Networks create revenue for members whether retailer or apparel producer
Networks create a salesforce for your product among apparel producers
Networks start locally, but grow regionally, state and nationwide
Networks grow exponentially

Business owners are familiar with risk and loss. You know how to assess risk. You know how to manage risk when you determine to take it on. You know how to overcome loss.
There's no greater truth than to, "love one another", to "do" good for one another just as you would have it done to you.

Kathleen Fasanella, owner of Fashion Incubator blog, has a much longer history in her (and mine) drive to make people aware and rallying them to sign the petition Design Prohibition Piracy Act. She has provided all the reading and links if you wish to delve deeper in the subject.

Your signature (this is the "political activism" part) requires no more than just that, _ your signature, yet its impact on behalf of independent designers, producers will be significant.

The nine pointts below are taken from a small, aggressive apparel manufacturer's site. The claims, explanations and services are quite typical. They are not outlandish.

They could as well be made by a local Independent Designer Group (IDG) in Round Rock, region, state or in the USA. Most of these manufacturers, so called, independent contractors consist of a small employee workforce numbering from as few as 5 to as many as 16 or 20. This is the single biggest difference from the IDG which is the combined, collaborative effort of truly independent contractors/consultants.

1 Made in the U.S.A. quality and service.
2 Low production minimums.
3 Quick turn around times compared to international manufacturing.
4 Project management.
5 A phone call away from painless communication.
6 North American Customers, no need to pay duties, beauracracies, tariffs or high shipping costs.
7 U.S.A made products are popular all over the world. With the low dollar, your business has a competitive advantage of entering the higher end markets around the globe.
8 U.S.A. made products can be easily exported to NAFTA countries (Canada and Mexico).
9 Supporting American Jobs and industry.

Although IDG members are independent they are not immune or exempt to market demands. An IDG must deliver if it is to survive and thrive. Like any business entity an IDG will produce its own offspring of individuals who are either attractive to the IDGs clients or who simply go out on their own once they have seen their own capabilities and opportunties in the market.

Layaway the IDG way

Revisiting, revising and innovation of old and new ideas has become a necessity survival strategy where not too long ago the ever maddening and relentless rush was for the new and trendy.

Layaway is one of those old retail business practices which has made its way back into daily business. Layaway, as a purchase plan, became popular in American retail during the 1930s Depression. It allowed people in serious economic struggle to purchase items otherwise out of their reach through a simple plan. Basically, the retailer retained possession of the merchandise until the buyer paid for it over a short timeframe from four to twelve weeks.

Since fall of 2008 Burlington Coat Factory, Kmart, Sears and Marshall's have reinstated the layaway plan.

What would a layaway plan look like and benefit consumer and retailer through the apparel Independent Consultant/Contractor Network model?

The creation of the local Independent Design Group (IDG) is self replication. You are the best. You know those closest to you and can readily identify others with top quality skills and service in apparel to bring into a network alliance. The IDG can easily implement a self-styled layaway plan of its own. I use the term "design" in a very general sense to include pattern-making, assembly, alteration and everything necessary to produce an apparel item to the customer's satisfaction. The IDG generates revenues for all members.

1 Network retailer members simply post in their boutique the IDG service for their customers and clients.

2 IDG members advise or recommend options to the client: Purchase a pattern, have one made, recommend fabrics, styles. The pattern is their property and is reusable and alterable.

3 The customer/client (CC) purchases/saves their pattern, fabrics and as well as their service fee. Whether it takes the CC one or two months neither consultant nor retailer have any investment tied up.

In the same manner as layaway plans work, IDG members can secure a portion of the service fee at the time they receive the order is delivered to them. Service by IDG members is either through the retailer or directly with the CC with compensation coming from either the retailer or the CC.

Layaway, the IDG way, is a practical, economic means for consumer and consultant/retailer alike to benefit in this present opportunity. Major retailers have shown their readiness and willingness to accept lessons and instruction in this economic environment. Independent retailer are equally capable of learning and implementing layaway for their gain and ultimate survival.

Benefits - The benefit of being able to associate with others whose pursuits for their financial freedom are just like yours.

I am not a Luddite. Luddites were factory workers in the early 1800 who destroyed machinery in northern England. Their actions were in protest to the loss of business taken over by factories.
I will not expend my time and energy in protesting the forward march of technology businesses and labor organizations in America. I choose to focus my actions on the vast resources, both natural and human, on the impact of offshore factories, unfulfilled workers and abandoned markets in America.

These markets have never been dominated, though they have tried, by the mega technology corporations. Specifically,I refer to the low-income consumer whitebox (generic desktops, whitebooks laptop computers) market with an estimated value of over 2 billion dollars. The expense of a computer purchase, while desirable to some is not a priority for the low-income consumer. Manufactureres, retailers or resellers have all failed to develop profitable technology sales strategies for this huge target market... Even midsize businesses do without needed technologies because there too there are no realistic technology sales strategies for them by manufacturers, retailers and resellers or mainstream technology services companies.

You may wonder what chance you have to succeed against behemonth manufacturing or food corporations. I too wondered what chance the man with a dream of owning a hamburger stand have against McDonald's or a consultant with his/her technology services. Then I thought of displaced workers tapping into unfulfilled markets and I realize that although a surplus income of $10,000 a year, for example, is nothing compared to Dell that's $10,000 in his/her pocket, not an employer.

I believe people acquire and in some instances amass vast Knowledge, Skills and Experience (KSE) over the course of their employment. This KSE is their wealth of resources. When two or more of these individuals network together each contributing their KSE they are no less capable as consultants than employees to take-on and fulfill service projects for small to midsize businesses. The group is able to assess by their skills and experience what projects they can seek out including setting up complete systems, networking, wireless, free software options and more.
As individuals in their communties they are in the perfect position to offer the low-income consumer the opportunity of a computer purchase. Using discount retailer, reseller resources the consumer is sent grocery list in hand with his $10 to purchase keyboard and mouse. Next month he goes with $20 in hand and purchases a hard-drive. He continues until six months later he has all components ready for you to assemble for the agreed upon fee. In the end he may well have paid a bit more than the least expensive system, but he was able to absorb the cost, without pressure, into his daily living expenses. There is no manufacturer, retailer or reseller that is ever going to offer him (or small to midsize businesses) that kind of a piece-part layaway plan.

Is there any reason why the same piece-part approach couldnt' be beneficial and profitable for small and midsize business involving networking, systems integration or even software application installation/training?

How do displaced (or even the gainfully employed) workers with their KSE come together? They come together through local, regional, state and national networks. These networks are not just buddy hangouts, but they are sources of

personal revenues from individual or group projects,

residual income generated from their own organizaton, and

bonuses paid the networker by the company.

This announcement by Dell is exciting news for me personally. I reflects my an idea I posted on Dell blogs over the last two years proposing Dell step into the role of distributor of system components for sale to independent consultants and resellers. No, Dell has not quite stepped into that role, but, you guessed it; I have posted my comment on this annoucement on company blogs with some reminders. Basicly, I have proposed a cost-efficient, low-risk revenue generating idea for Dell and I believe at this time Dell may be more amenable to step into the opportune role of itself becoming a distributor. I am sharing with you the comment (the blue text) I posted to the company announcement.

It pleases me to see this great change in strategy by Dell for itself and what it means to its employment force. I am especially pleased because this strategy resembles my business model idea I posted on Ideastorm a while back complete with an expanded choice of product offerings.Dell, with this action, is one step closer and perhaps more amenable to step into the opportune role I proposed a while back, that of distributor. What could Dell do in the role of distributor? Allow, in the most cost-efficient, low-risk manner, a network of independent consultants, resellers who are able to do what major manufacturers have been unable to do: Reach the low-income consumer with generic products.

Dell receives online or call-in orders from consultants. These, technicians, engineers, hobbyists, students and others either out of social altruism or to generate revenue for themselves do not need pre-configured systems. They do just fine with system components boxed and shipped to them. The Dell labor cost clock stops the moment parts are boxed and sealed.

One last point in which I find much satisfaction is how Dell has addressed the warranty assignment issue with its newfound distributor partners. It is satisfying to me because I learned from Michael Dell one need not know how to solve a problem. You just need to get someone who knows how. While shipping system components to network consultants likely may raise anew the warranty issue, I am confident it too can be addressed satisfactorily for all. My best wishes for all at Dell.

The combined talent, diversity, experience, and resourcefulness of these in a team driven by a mutual desire not only to survive, but to thrive in our present economy. The requirements and performance for delivery of customer satisfaction is the same as when they deliver it as employees. Now, as IE-Networkers, they are committed to the utmost in customer satisfaction as consultants, each one contributing to the efficienct, effective, economic and profitable succes of the network.

Who said these same individuals can't partner together merely because they are not employees? The wonderful dynamics at play between network members is akin to what we all do every day. We drive down the streets and highways alongside people we do not trusting everyone will do their part to ensure we arrive at our intended destination safely. Does that transportation system ever fail? Yes, but accidents are the rare exception and not the rule. Is it possible a network can encounter an accident in its team operation or delivery? Yes. When it happens it's the employer or the police who will step in and fix it. It's the business expectation and need of network entrepreneurs to make things right and continue.

Who said small business would never listen to a group of highly talented and skilled consultants capable and willing to deliver their services? Although in a down economy companies lay off workers it's also a time when many of them will retool, realign and upgrade. Most small, even mid-size companies, consider technical support far out of their economic reach. A network would enable them to tap into the best in IT talent.

IE-Networks generate revenues for members in increasing forms through 1) personal income from individual projects, 2) residual income consisting of percentages received from the networker's organization and paid out to them by TSR, Inc., and 3) bonuses paid out to the networker as their organization revenues for TSR, Inc hit predetermined amounts resulting in increasing, regular bonuses. Small business owners, too, have the same opportunity as consultants to obtain network membership and generate revenues for themselves.

All networker members, whether individual consultants or small businesses are free to conduct business wherever and whomever they choose provided TSR, Inc is authorized to conduct business in that state. Presently, TSR, Inc plans are to launch from Round Rock Texas and proceed from a local, to regional, to state to nationwide networks.

Lastly, I believe IE-Networks are the best, most effective grassroots means of taking hold of many things which have gotten away from the American worker to the hurt of his family and country. There's no need to engage in bitter, vile exchanges against this group or that group, but do what you know you can do and must do to strengthen yourself economically whether you are an H-1B foreign worker, or an American worker affected by H-1B foreign workers facing deportation or unemployment, respectively.

If you've never thought of developing a network as a source of revenue it's time you look into it and do it.

The last few months before my workplace shutdown was exasperating for management. It was exasperating because they just could not get people to take the company's resume workshops which were offered along with job fairs.

So, I know there are many of you out there in the Round Rock, Austin area without a job. You also don't have a resume. You need a well-written resume.

The Jobseekers' Ministry is a free, no-cost resume assistance workshop of the Round Rock Church of Christ. I myself along with others involved in this ministry will help you create or update your resume. You do the talking. I do the typing. Some things we hope you will gain:

Computers for kids Tech Volunteers

Attention: Computer Technicians, Engineers, Hobbyists

If you have ever wondered how you could possibly help put computers in the hands of children from low-income families you need not wonder any longer. If you are a technician, engineer, student, hobbyist or other person with the computer know-how and would like to donate your expertise contact Ken Starks.

Ken created his non-profit Helios Project with the specific purpose of making a difference in the academic lives of these young children by providing them free, no-cost computers. They are located in North Austin near Howard Lane and Interstate 35.

Ken's organization builds, delivers and installs anywhere from 3 to 15 computers a week to disadvantaged kids in the Central Texas area. They have also taken on a newly-opened community center in East Austiin as a project and are currently building them a complete learning center for the neighborhood kids.

There will be 16 fully-functioning computers there by the time they finish. Not only are they supplying the machines, they will be rotating class facilitators in every week to teach them the basics of computer and internet use. Tom King will be offering a class on beginning programming for those interested.

The team has the Linux Against Poverty Project they expect to launch in August and it is expected to be a big deal. Interested to get involved with this great work?

Dear friends, I appreciate your long patience with me while you waited on these YouTube videos.

Here they are, at last.

I expect I will redo these videos. It's no fun talking to a camera in a small room. I much prefer the live stage. Also, it doesn't help when you're shooting in a reserved room in the library. ssshhhh!!!

I not only had to wade through a self-taught crash course on video making, editing, uploading and all that business, but I had to make a clear presentation. Actually, I do have a friend who provided some great assistance. I admit it is not as pure (no fault of my friend) as I would like, but I am not going to keep any perfectionism (which I am not!) from posting the videos.

I intend to breakdown the whole business presentation into short videos. I would not subject your eyes to a long painful ordeal. Believe me, I am shooting for a two-minute video as ideal.

America's Edge

I tend to draw connections between things. Sometimes that leaves people with a "whuh?" look on their face. I read this article America's Edge: Power in the Networked Century by Anne-Marie Slaughter in Foreign Affairs. She writes about the advantage the US has over all other countries because of its democratic and cultural environment where networking and the efficiencies, innovation associated with it thrive. She makes her point on the value of networks whether in government, business, competing to win and voluntary contributions such as Wikipedia. I won't burden you with the entire article. This is the opening paragraph with following excerpts.

We live in a networked world. War is networked: the power of terrorists and the militaries that would defeat them depend on small, mobile groups of warriors connected to one another and to intelligence, communications, and support networks. Diplomacy is networked: managing international crises -- from SARS to climate change -- requires mobilizing international networks of public and private actors. Business is networked: every CEO advice manual published in the past decade has focused on the shift from the vertical world of hierarchy to the horizontal world of networks. Media are networked: online blogs and other forms of participatory media depend on contributions from readers to create a vast, networked conversation. Society is networked: the world of MySpace is creating a global world of "OurSpace," linking hundreds of millions of individuals across continents. Even religion is networked: as the pastor Rick Warren has argued, "The only thing big enough to solve the problems of spiritual emptiness, selfish leadership, poverty, disease, and ignorance is the network of millions of churches all around the world."

Businesses in the United States can orchestrate global networks of producers and suppliers. Consumers can buy locally, from revived local agricultural and customized small-business economies, and at the same time globally, from anywhere that can advertise online. The power that flows from this type of connectivity is not the power to impose outcomes. Networks are not directed and controlled as much as they are orchestrated. Multiple players are integrated into a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts --an orchestra that plays differently according to the vision of its conductor and the talent of individual musicians.
She writes on the importance of "conflict, not violent conflict, but positive, or constructive, conflict, the kind of conflict that produces non-zero-sum solutions. This the kind of conflict is found on American playing fields, in American courtrooms, and in the American political system. It is the conflict of structured competition, in which losers have a chance to win another day and everyone has a stake in continually improving the game.

It is also the conflict of creative destruction, the process of destroying old business models to make way for new ones.

". . . Americans are inveterate joines, volunteers, and debaters. Today, however, instead of sewing circles, debating societies, and charity bake sales, Americans have MySpace, blogs . . .and _ Wikipedia"

But the premise is the same: multiple minds clashing and correcting one another in pursuit of the truth. The work of one contributor is open and available for others to use. Participants in this process are trusted to not take advantage of that openess but instead add their own contributions

The Internet world, the wiki world, and the networked world all began in the United States and radiated outward.

Step up. Get close to the edge and network because nets work.

Delivery: Make it good

Those of you with whom I have talked or who read my blog are familiar with my thoughts on the consultant/retailer relationship. Really, the unfortunate truth is there has not been much of a relationship between the two; service provider (consultant, enterprise, contractor) and service recipient (retailer, reseller). This, despite the fact both have responded with hope and enthusiasm when they heard about the Independent Enterprise Network model.

After avoiding to speak to the issue of how these two view compensation for a service or product delivered I decided to speakout on that issue. I did it because I saw this as an area where both which has a huge undermining affect on what otherwise could be just as huge an affect for greatness.

There is another issue I believe both of you, consultant and retailer are familiar with because you have experienced it at one end or the other of a business transaction. It is the matter of delivery.

Although I have never (except for cross country trucking earning contract pay many years ago) earned my livelihood as a service provider; a consultant. I realize I may be guilty of contributing to the delivery problem. If you scroll down on the left side of my blog to “The Face of Private Ownership” piece with my picture you would know what I mean.

Consultants, and retailers/resellers inasmuch as they are independent, too, are "independent contractor" accountable to no one, but yourself.

The reality is that while that may be your boast it is not all together true. You, consultant and retailer, are accountable to one another for the sake of the customer. It with the customer in mind that the matter of delivery becomes every bit as important as quality.

Although one of the defining points of a consultant status is that he/she does not receive detail instructions as to how the project is to be done. I believe that is the critical problem in the delivery promise, but although it is a legal defining point that does not mean the two parties can not agree to some points regarding delivery.

Suppose you contract on a delivery promise of 10 dresses, or, 10 computer systems at the end of 30 days. Again, legally, the service recipient has no business dictating how you are to get it done. You are just to deliver. However, this is where many consultants and retailers have been burned, either through some poor quality delivered on the 30th day, or incomplete delivery.

How to move pass such a miscarriage of delivering on a promise?

Talk with each other. Take the initiative. Ask if this or that can be done. Offer to do this or that within the first few days.

You are accountable. Deliver on the promise of your accountability. It’s your word. Make it good.

1. Know the age of your niche market
Niche markets may be small and limited, but offer huge potential. China is a niche market, but wouldn’t you like in on that niche market! Sam Walton tapped into a niche market in discount retail as well as Michael Dell and we know how it turned out for them. The niche market of 35 – 60 year women represents such an opportunity. These are not fickle clients and would more likely favor a real, local retailer with whom they develop a relationship to deliver on their customer-made apparel orders.

2. Know the overweight shape of your niche market
This is a reality and the sooner you tap into it the better. These clients are likely not thrilled about the prospect of shopping store after store with increasing frustration and dissatisfaction with product and service.

3. Know the sports apparel and workout gear interests of your niche market
Your clients care not only about what they wear, but what they can do towards improving their health through exercise.

4. Know how to cater to the tastes and needs of your people becoming seniors in your niche market
Your clients may reminisce fondly about what they wore in their youth, but don’t assume they want to wear the same in the mature years. However, they may be open to some design variations on yesteryear’s style.

5. Know what and how you need to train your niche market
Department stores such as Nordstrom’s, Neiman-Marcus and Dillard’s have trained consumers to wait for the sale. What’s a major department store to do with a floor full of unsold apparel items, but to hold a sale. This Christmas my hope is you are able to draw deep from Christmases past and reflect on what this time means for you. Whatever it has meant for you, whether faith, hope or love of God, friends or family; all these are present for you at all times, not just a particular time of the year.

While I can understand it may not hold meaning for some other than a time together with family and exchanging of gifts that in itself is a story which will be passed down through your family. That in itself is a powerful story of togetherness as preferred to aloneness.

I remember a few years ago when I would teach a unit on each holiday as it came up hoping to enlighten my fifth grade class kids. I thought I wanted them to understand a bit more than it being a day off from school or in later years a day off from work and picnics at the park. My fellow teachers were aghast that I was teaching the “r” subject to which I replied I was no more teaching religion than I was teaching segregation when we covered the 1960s civil rights movement. My declaration to the kids was: I am not asking if you believe it. I am not telling you to believe. I am telling you what is found in libraries throughout the world in places where the story about a baby named Jesus grew up to be crucified and resurrected to be declared the Son of God is not believed at alone, but it is preserved and taught as history as a lasting story.

When you exhange presents with your family remember:

I strongly believe the Independent Enterprise Network model is the best, most effective and efficient means for establishing, strengthening or developing local enterprise relationships between independents and retailer/resellers in computer and apparel sales.

Judging by the readership of this blog I can see the interest in states other than Texas. We know Americans are struggling throughout our nation and it is my earnest desire to expand IE-Networks nationwide as quickly as possible.

We have witnessed some extraordinary and unprecedented actions by our government in the business sector. Repeatedly, we have heard those actions were not about what was popular, likeable or party policy, but it was what needed to be done.

The IE-Network model is not nearly as grand or as top-heavy as would require government or big business involvement. It does represent an opportunity for those willing to explore other viable, legal, moral and ethical options for conducting business while building up their community at the same time.

Of course, that has only intensified their decision for a even stronger drive into those low-income markets, because the simple truth is; small revenue returns from small items from millions and millions of buyers is much better than no sale, no revenue all the more given the present global economy.

While it pleases me to know people in those developing countries including emerging BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China) markets I see no less an opportunity for entrepreneurs in America. Specifically, in the low-income consumer market in America. Major manufacturers are geared too high in price and their assumptions about this market segment to penetrate and compete successfully. Some personal observations I have encountered countless times living, working and interacting with these Americans might help to elaborate on that a little bit.

The multi-billion dollar low-income consumer market in America

As many people as are quick to confirm they own a computer an even greater number confess it doesn't work or it's too slow, too old. Then, there is a large number of them who do not own a computer because the price is out of their reach. Some have no desire to own one. Others do not know what they could possibly do with one. Still, others desire to own one with some uncertainty as to what they would do with it, but they cannot afford it. Even if they could scramble the financial resources to buy one they cannot justify such a large-sum expense. The fact is major computer manufacturers know of this multi-billion dollar low-income consumer market in America. As big a market as it is it is best accessed by the smallest sole proprietor, the entreprenuer. The smallest slice of that pie could well make a considerable difference of family income for some people.

There is no bank or retailer expected to provide a loan or a layaway option for these consumers. The best, workable option is in the very community in which they live. They are in the midst of a vertible network of technical know-how individuals and consumers. How do they connect and how do they help each other while at the same time provide a boost to our economy from the bottom up?

The IPC Plan

It's not a loan or layaway plan or government subsidy, but the IPC (Individual Part-purchase Control) Plan. It represents a way to break through even the lowest retail price barrier. There is no document or contract to sign. The IPC Plan is merely a practical concept of mutual benefit between two people.

You, the technician, hobbyist, engineer, direct the consumer with "grocery list" in hand to Goodwill, other thrift store, reseller or discount electronics retailer week after week, month after month for every part required for his system. The consumer controls his weekly, monthly purchase expenses as he can afford it.

The consumer stores components in his home individual with parts inventory list.
The consumer and you agree on a date when you will build the system, unload and install software.
You build the system for the agreed upon fee.
The consumer owns his computer debt-free.
Total control of expenses by consumer

The parts inventory list is not only a running total of parts and cost, but the consumer can exercise his freedom to take it to anyone he chooses when he is ready to contract a builder for his system should the tech change residence, decline to build it or has become overwhelmed with too many orders.

What this involves is more than the consumer can ever expect from a retailer; a relationship between two members of a community. Some minor points of education would involve safe-guarding components from static electricity discharge and other careful handling reminders. In the end, the total cost of parts and your fee could exceed the cheapest system the consumer saw at the corner retailer. No, there's nothing wrong with this picture. Your neighbor, friend or client was well aware of his financial investment in the IPC Plan. The difference between the IPC Plan and a retail purchase is the consumer was able to absorb the cost into his daily living expenses. The expenses were in his total control.

Listening to opportunity

Independent Enterprise Networks enable members to connect with other techs as well as consumers. You determine the size and complexity of your project whether a private consumer or small business owner. Like the consumer, you, the networker determine how many separate client IPC Plans you have in your portfolio at any give time. The only financial expense is made by and controlled by the consumer. A local discount retailer or reseller may not be impressed, take notice or listen to one tech, but when they see the numbers involved with networks that has a way to make them listen to opportunity.

Borrowing change

I want to borrow a theme word from the election 2008 campaign for my own recurring theme: Change.

Specifically, that is change in the independent consultant / retailer business model relationship. Maybe you’re feeling our current economic crisis press on you for a “survive-to-thrive-again” mindset. What comes to mind, typically? Reduce your workforce? Reduce your expenses? These measures may be good for your business despite the wrenching gut-feeling from facing workers you esteem to dismiss them. Reducing your expenses involves less direct human interaction: Stop eat-out, take-out meal, seek out less a expensive source.

Again, these measures, from the business owner’s perspective, are good. However, the problem remains: You have not increased inbound cash flow. Who said you can’t increased cash flow in a recession (Yes, it’s time to face up to the r word . . .reality, too)? You ever notice in a “down” economy there’s always someone who’s buying when others are selling in a panic? One of the noteworthy responses to the global economic crisis was significantly different than other past regional economic downturns in the world. National leaders, in past regional economic downturns, scrambled to gain an edge for their country at the expense of their neighbor.

Independent Consultant Networks survive and thrive for people and because of people who survive and thrive only by helping others gain an advantage for themselves.

It’s the familiar adage: “What goes around comes around” with a mutual benefit twist for all.

Whiteboxes in Texas

I came across this interesting article with a long thread of responses.
You all know this topic is dear to my heart, but my heart sank like a rock as I made my way down the thread.

The time got away from me to post a timely reply to his message regarding whiteboxes being illegal in Texas as of September 2008. I did a bit of research and found it’s HB2417 to which he alludes. Bear in mind I am a layman in these matters and do not take what I say as a final word.

House Bill 2417 is an environmental law which will requires recycling of computers by manufacturers. The bill addresses the problem concerning whitebox (or, “no brand”) computers, namely, that they do not bear the manufacturers name. The bill, as I understand it, is not so much that whiteboxes are illegal, but that the manufacturer must identify itself as the manufacturer in some way even if by some means other than the manufacturers name. Ultimately, the law is about ensuring all computers are disposed of in legal, proper
compliance with Texas state law. Manufacturers are required to submit a recycling policy.

My personal (what else could it be, right?) of the law is that it focuses on manufacturers, not individual sole proprietors. If you advise your neighbor in the purchase of computer components over a three month period, assemble it, load software you have just manufactured a whitebox computer. If you built it for yourself that is a whitebox you manufactured. By all means, as a responsible citizen, turn it over to Dell, HP or retailer who are collection centers for recycling at no cost to you.

The Texas business climate is favors entrepreneurs. I believe our current economic times will
have laptop buyer parents looking at desktops for a better bargain. Yes, laptops are quite inexpensive. Desktops are even more. Whiteboxes even more, still.

Go’on. Build you one.

If you build it for the good of all

The words whispered to Ray Kinsella played by Kevin Costner in the 1989 movie, “Field of Dreams” were the catalyst for building a baseball park for the legacy and the legends of the game. We never see the finished park. What was to attract fans was not a humongous facility, but the re-capture of a simple, wholesomeness for the good of all.

The words, “If you build it they will come” were as much about the players, those who play for the absolute love of the game, as well as the fans.

I have been urging and encouraging people with the Knowledge, Skills and Experience to build computers and servers for small business and neighbors, alike. That’s nothing spectacular. People will come to you not for the glitz, but for the homespun trust and “service” (actually, it’s “being neighborly”) they chance not finding at their local retailer for something they can use and is affordable. It is a means of revenue for the system builders and a means of allowing low-income Americans the opportunity to own a computer.

My search for the cheapest computer came up with $279, $195 and $164 (monitor not included). I am not going to name brands as a matter of principal. I maintain with a little resourcefulness an at-home tech-built computer system will beat the cheapest. How, you ask?

Lets understand, for starters, even $164 is a bit more than many people can comfortable to pull out of pocket for a single purchase. So, why do I believe they would be willing to pay even twice as much?

The next time your co-worker, neighbor or friend laughs at the prospect of owning a computer tell him to drop by when he’s got $10 to spare. Then, you send him off with a single-item grocery list to Goodwill or a discount parts reseller to buy a power supply, keyboard or mouse. Next month he’s got $20 and he holds it another month until he’s got $35. You send him off with a grocery list and he returns with a motherboard. Finally, six months later after purchasing a hard drive and monitor and other essentials he has everything you need to build his system.

On a sunny Saturday morning your friend brings coffee and tacos (donuts? bagels?) and joins you in the garage. You assemble the system and install the Windows copy he bought at Goodwill or you go online to download the OS for his computer. After numerous reboots your friend is a happy, proud owner of his first system and puts $30 dollars in your hand as agreed between neighbors, previously. Total price: $400. SAY WHAT!! Whoa thar, hombre!!

What happened to the cheaper-than-retailer talk? No, this is not a case of poor addition. The above scenario is not to depict exact price for every single piece nor your service fee. It is intended to show how your friend, on his own terms, buys all the essential components for his system, himself. In the end the price tag could possibly exceed the reseller’s display case model. What’s the advantage for your friend? It is a deal he is never going to get at Best Buy, Circuit City, Walmart, Dell or HP. He won’t even get that on layaway and it's certainly not a handout.

The advantage and the reason your friend is happy is that despite the fact he could see this was turning out to cost a bit more than the store model

The bottom dollar price was one he was able to absorb into his daily living expenses.

This scenario, when replicated through the dynamic of a network is nothing less than the inclusion of the low-income consumer into the cyber world. Greater still than building a computer for a neighbor is the buildup of community one neighbor at a time for the good of all.

America is a consumer society. We buy things and ideas. When it comes to computers those in the industry, who are themselves consumers, buy, both computers and the IT myth: There is no longer a digital divide.

Other takes on this myth: Desktops are out. Everybody’s buying laptops. Sure.

The focus of the EDUCAUSE Review article The Myth about the Digital Divide: We Have Overcome the Digital Divide by Brian L Hawkins and Diana G Oblinger is on computer owners, primarily. Elsewhere, I have called for computer manufacturers and VARs and resellers to target the low-income consumer market; those who do not own a computer in America. This is a consumer overlooked on the blazing path to obliterating (NOT!) the digital divide.

The four points below are taken from the IT myth article.

1. Do we know whether students have a computer? Do we know their skill level? Although it is easy to assume that all students own a computer and are computer-literate, is that a correct description of the student body? Is ownership the same for all students, or are there significant differences between groups, such as traditional-age students and adult learners? Are there different needs based on academic discipline?

2. Do we look beyond who has Internet access to consider online skills? What online skills, support, and freedom of use define an appropriate threshold for digital access and use on campus?

3. Do we limit the definition of digital divide to a haves and have-nots dichotomy? The digital divide is not a yes-no proposition; it is a continuum. Beyond computer ownership lie issues of Internet access at a reasonable speed, as well as availability of support. The campus may need to define its own metrics to determine the extent of its underserved, digital divide population.

4. How limiting will inadequate online skills be to students? The ultimate issue behind the digital divide is the ability of students to learn, explore, and become participating members of their chosen communities. Education is increasingly dependent on students technical proficiency not only to find information but also to analyze material and access experts. If students are regularly expected to participate in online discussions or use tools such as wikis, campuses should provide reasonable support to ensure that students can participate effectively and autonomously.

What I infer from this article is there is a sizeable market among these existing computer owners. Unless they are buying a new computer Dell, HP and Lenovo have no interest in them. These computer owners are not a myth. They are an open market for VARs, resellers and independent consultants who don’t believe the myth.

A step closer to Prom 2009

I went to Jo-Ann’s Fabrics, today.

What was that like you ask? Well, if you walked into O’Reilly’s and saw all the shiny auto parts, how would you feel? I was a bit apprehensive about being there. I thought to turn and run, but when Toni called “number 18" I stepped up.

Toni stepped out from behind the cutting table (is that the correct term?) to assist me. She followed me to the fabrics section. She was very cordial and helpful, not patronizing or condescending even though she knew she was dealing with someone who doesn’t know taffeta from muslin.

My mission was to get some idea of three key things when making your own prom dress: Fabric, pattern and price. Toni showed me some examples: one Vogue (V2891) and two Simplicity (4070 & 3784) patterns.

The Simplicity 3784 pattern was priced at $16.95, or with the store 40% discount; $10.17. The Vogue V2891 pattern was priced at $27.50 and at 40% discount; $16.50.

Fabric prices ranged at one end from 5.99 – 9.99/yd for the 60 inch bolt to 3.75 to 4.75/yd for the 45 inch bolt.

The approximate cost of the Simplicity 3784 and fabric price at the high end in both ranges is below.

Simplicity pattern 3784: $ 10.17 10.17
Fabric 4.25/ 3yds 14.25
Fabric 9.99/ 3yds 29.97

Total $ 40.14 $ 24.42

Who are your clients? Moms and daughters who will be shopping for prom dresses for Prom 2009. Where are they? McNeil, Round Rock, Stony Point and Westwood high schools in Round Rock Texas or wherever you live.

Once you consult with your client they go and shop Jo-Ann Fabrics for the above pattern (or one similar) and fabric at between 40 and 24 dollars they have taken a big part in the ownership of their designer prom dress.

The next part is yours. You have measurements, needle and thread and a delivery date. The fee you set is your business, but whether a low $40 or high $70 you have a client who has agreed to your fee in consultation. The bottom line fee may be the same or no less than your client would have obtained from a retailer or online. The great thing about it though is they got THEIR fabric, color, fit and price all in time for the big event. No last minute rush shopping.

Something else to consider. The earlier consultation allows clients the benefit of being able to purchase these materials far in advance. Then they can then direct their finances toward covering your fee. In other words, they don’t have to be hit hard with an expenditure of 90 to 120 dollars all at once on the same day.

Think up some incentives to reward clients who send you referrals. An economy like our current one always has opportunity, both for you and your clients. Just do it.

Finally, all the above is my best attempt at being accurate and honest with the numbers. I must allow the possibility I erred in my math somewhere, but I trust you quite likely have a far better understanding of what I’m talking about.

By Neil Davey The last ten years or so in the retail world has been a grim time for smaller independents.

The march of the big box retailers and their relentless focus on scale, efficiency and cost cutting has left many smaller shop owners despairing that they can ever compete.
Of course this is crazy talk. After all Sam Walton began Wal-Mart’s journey by taking over a single franchise store and building from there. And as Uzi Yemen, CEO of the MAPCO Express C-store chain, explains elsewhere in these pages, US retail will always have room for entrepreneurs willing to take risks and build a business.
Of course the key in retail is to give customers something they want. The vast scale of the big boys means that smaller stores won’t succeed if they try to compete directly with supercenters – they don’t have the scale or logistics to make this feasible.

But all is not lost. One of the big buzz’s in retail in localization – how can assortments, and even stores be created to better serve the needs of local, unique markets. And while the heavyweights of the sector scratch their heads and wonder how to re-design supply chains, or take advantage of the reams of customer data they produce to meet these needs, it’s fair to say that smaller, local, stores have an inherent advantage in focusing their efforts on local needs.

To look at how smaller chains and stores can better compete ERS has spoken to Thomas Zaucha, the CEO of the National Grocers Association, and Marc Jacobs, author and CEO of Dollar Days. They explain how being small should be seen as an advantage – as long as you have the insight to offer something different.

Opportunity knocks

For independent retailers, the news that a big box retailer is to open up shop in their community is enough to send shivers down the spine. Yet evidence suggests that it needn’t be a death knell for small retailers. Indeed, research by DollarDays International has revealed that by undertaking various strategic changes, 42 percent of small retailers maintained their market share when a big box player opened up nearby – and a further 35 percent actually reported an increase in business.

Marc Joseph is CEO of DollarDays International, an internet-based product wholesaler to small businesses and local distributors. After being inundated with calls from entrepreneurs seeking advice, he decided to put his nearly 30 years of experience in retailing and wholesaling, to use in the form of a book. The ensuing tome, entitled “The Secrets of Retailing…Or How to Beat Wal-Mart” details how small businesses can compete with big box retailers that come to their towns, as well as providing advice on the nuts and bolts of setting up a successful retail chain. Marc divulges some of the secrets to ERS.

ERS. What are the main strengths of big box retailers?

MJ. There are two things that have made them strong. The number one is their ability to buy in bulk. There are certain commodity goods on which you can’t compete with chainstores – laundry detergent, for instance, or paper goods. They can just buy truckload after truckload and small stores have to buy it in pallet form, so the chainstores compete on price. The second thing is their efficiencies of distribution. Wal-Mart has a just-in-time inventory system where it can flow goods from manufacturers to the stores very quickly and very efficiently. So the whole distribution center that these chainstores have created for themselves is a competitive advantage.

ERS. According to survey results by DollarDays International, 99 percent of the small businesses have big box retailers located near their stores. Does this spell the end for these small businesses?

MJ. If you are an entrepreneur this is actually an opportune time to go into retail, because the chainstores have created so much opportunity for everybody else. There are a couple of factors that have come about in the last ten years that have made it such a good time. The first thing is technology. The cost of technology has come so far down that small stores can now have the same kind of technology as the chain stores. Independent stores can now track their inventory and track their customers. That has created the opportunity to have the knowledge you need to compete. The other thing that has arrived to give the independent stores a chance to compete is the internet. Small stores are not only selling across the street and across town, but now they can sell across the US and the world. So this has opened up a whole opportunity for bricks and mortar stores.

ERS. Interestingly, the survey results suggest that 72 percent of small businesses opened their stores after the chainstores arrived in town. This seems to tie in with your argument that these chainstores have created opportunities.

MJ. Lets take the coffee shop business as an example. Starbucks is on every corner of the US. They are everywhere. But there are 600 more independent coffee shops now in this country than there were six years ago. What happens is that it is kind of like when the tide comes in, all the ships rise. The awareness of the coffee industry has created a niche for these smaller independents to go out there and find their little piece of the action. So chainstores create opportunity for independent stores.

ERS. How can retailers translate this opportunity into big bucks?

MJ. We advise entrepreneurs to open a store right next to a chain store. The Targets and the Wal-Marts of the world are spending millions of dollars to drive customers into their stores, so smart entrepreneurs are opening up independent stores around that to play off the traffic, so they don’t have to pay for all the advertising. These chainstores have also opened up the opportunity for dollar stores. When you walk into any modern mall these days, you will see a dollar store. A place where everything is easy to understand and you don’t have to ask about pricing and you can buy what you want. Retail Forward predicts that there is going to be another 9000 more dollar stores in the US by 2009.

Another niche that opens up when chainstores arrive are gift stores, selling better kinds of unique interesting kinds of gifts. And then there are specialty retailers – none of these chainstores do large sizes well, and none of them do juniors well. So you see that these independent apparel stores are opening up all over the place. When you think about it, most major trends have started in independent stores, because they are the ones out there taking a little chance and trying something a little different. And then it is picked up by the chainstores. So we see that chainstores have opened up an opportunity for entrepreneurs to open up their own independent stores.

ERS. In your book you suggest that there are a number of secrets to competing with the big players. Can you divulge the secrets?

MJ. There are seven secrets; seven ways that you can compete. One is by selling close-outs. A true close-out is only a couple or three truckloads of product. Because it is small quantities, independent stores can buy what chainstores can’t, because they can’t fill all 500 of their stores with close-outs. So true close-outs give the independent the chance to have a lower price and show something different than the chainstore. The second thing is that there are plenty of manufacturers that are just too small to sell to chainstores – there are more and more places where they just don’t make enough product. So there are plenty of manufacturers with which you can create that relationship and buy unique product. We also have a whole level of manufacturing where they won’t sell to chainstores because it would take up 80 percent of their production to deal with them and then if the store takes their business offshore it will put the manufacturer out of business. So you have the opportunity to find those manufacturers who will do that for you.

Also, the small stores have an agility with their overhead costs – chainstores have got management super structures, teams of buyers, lawyers, store designers, public relations and so forth. If small stores need someone to do public relations they just outsource it. And you run your own store so you have got the ability to figure out when you need people in the store to service your customers and when you don’t. You have got the opportunity to get agility on the overhead. Another reason that small stores can compete is that they offer a much simpler shopping experience. I was in Target last weekend, and I had to park all the way out at the end of the parking lot, It took me ten minutes to get into the store; where I was going to was at the back of the store, so that took me another ten minutes; it took me another ten minutes to check out…it is an experience going in these chain stores! Independent stores are smaller, you can usually park close to them and you can get in and out.

Elsewhere, there are plenty of rural areas that are just too small to support chainstores. And there are inner cities where chainstores just don’t go. So there are independent stores being opened up by entrepreneurs because of their location. And the last thing is customer service. If you run an independent store you get to know the customer so that he/she feels at home. You go to a chainstore and sure they have a guy greeting you but that is really for security. They want to get you through the registers as fast as they can. The whole personal attention thing really works and is something that independents could run with.

ERS. Ultimately, is your message that small retailers need to understand that when a big box retailer opens in their community it’s not a death sentence?

MJ. It is more of an opportunity than a challenge.

So there you have it – for smaller stores the secret seems to be leveraging the best practice and technology that has been developed by the bigger boys, and utilizing their size and agility to offer a different customer experience to the supercenters. You might not be able to land a knock-out blow to the might of Wal-Mart et al, but clever retailers should at least be able to get to a points decision. Difficulties remain for sure, but if retail were easy then it wouldn’t be any fun.

Tips to compete with big box retailers

Think small?
Large chains can’t benefit from true closeouts, which are broken lots or leftover goods that a manufacturer needs to unload. This gives the smaller retailer a chance to show products of real value.

Be unique?
There are many new and unique products that, because the supply is limited, chains pass over them, giving the independent stores a chance.

Develop relationships with small manufacturers?
Many small manufacturers will not sell to chainstores.

Agility on overhead cost?
Small retailers can beat the giants in another price-related factor: their overheads can be significantly lower.

Simpler shopping experience for the customer?
A store that is 2000 square feet is much easier to shop than a 100,000 square foot giant.

Location?
Underserved neighborhoods are a real opportunity for independent stores to thrive. Be where the giants are not. Personal attention?Customer service is the backbone to the independent business. People like to shop where they feel comfortable and at home, where they feel the owner cares about their wants and needs.

Discount designers

It seems every week we are exposed to some new effect of our struggling economy. Read this article on how high fashion designers are not above moving into the low-end discount market to increase sales. The most interesting thing to me is that in our economy, such as it is,
none of these designers think to ease up, slow down, or wait for better times.

Here’s what I take from the article for local independent apparel retailers determined to succeed and grow in this economy:

· Have you designed an affordable line?
· Are you reaching more people?
· Have you created any new partnerships?
· Do you have a source of new designers to provide you with fresh ideas and designs?

The value of a penny doubled

If you have ever attended a network business opportunity meeting you have probably been teased, provoked and made to feel silly/stupid with this question:
Do you know how much money you would have if you took one cent on the first of the month and doubled it every day for thirty days?
Just to give you the idea: Day one = 1 cent, Day two = 2 cents, Day three = 4 cents, Day 4 = 8 cents. Guesses range from .60 cents to $60 to “about 100 dollars”.

I have heard it more than a few times at network business meetings. Unfortunately, I believe the presenter and his/her audience often overlook the more important lessons while they argue in their minds the disbelieve at what they are hearing. If you are a whiz with a calculator you figured it out as quickly as it took you to touch those number keys. You others can take the slightly longer, manual approach. Take a sheet of paper. Number it one through thirty for the days of the month. Then start writing in your numbers beginning with 1 cent for day one, 2 cents for day two, 4 cents for day three until you reach day thirty on your paper.

One co-worker argued as though he knew for certain I was mistaken without even attempting to figure it out for himself: Lesson number one: Perseverance. Another co-worker simply worked his fingers on the calculator and confirmed what I had told him. A friend replied, “Yeah, that’s assuming you have a penny to double every day”: Lesson number two: Networking. This little exercise was reported by Richard Poe in the first ever investigative work by a veteran journalist in his book on network marketing, “Wave 3: The New Era in Network Marketing”.

Lesson number one is about perseverance. It’s about sticking with it to the end. My co-worker was unwilling to even start the work of figuring out the answer. I can’t say I did any better. The first time I sat down with paper and pencil I thought to quit at about day 25 because it seemed to me, “No way is this going to add up”. Even though I knew the total dollar outcome at 30 days I was about to quit! I was incensed at myself for even thinking to quit on a friendly mental one-cent exercise.

Lesson number two is about networking; what the many can do together. My friend missed the point saying, “. . . assuming you have a penny. . .” Networking is all about what the many can do together for each other, not you alone. Things, like one cent, that have very small beginnings can grow enormously far beyond what any single individual can imagine or can accomplish on his own . . .if you do the work.

J Paul Getty was an oilman in Oklahoma in the 1930s. Although he was not a networker he understood the concept. One of his sayings: “I would rather earn 1 dollar from a 100 people than 100 dollars myself.” The networking concept has been well understood and practiced by corporations like McDonald’s, Starbucks and Burger King who cover the country (and the world) with their franchises. Corporations earn small license royalties (called, “residual income”, also) over and over from their many franchises. Networking, or private franchising, allows any private individual with the vision and desire to build a business to receive similar royalties from networkers in their organization.

Seemingly small things are transformed before our very eyes and we fail to see it. There is an instance recorded in scripture when Jesus fed 5000 with 5 loaves and 2 fish. The disciples who walked through the crowd dispensing the loaves and fish failed to see their baskets never ran empty. Worse still, it never dawned on them they gathered 12 baskets full from the leftovers after the 5000 ate. They were no worse than many of us who fail to see things before our eyes greater than we’d ever imagined.

The point of the exercise is neither a promise nor guarantee of immense wealth in thirty days. It is about the reward and the value of a penny as being far greater than its monetary worth when two or more people work together.

The next time opportunity knocks at your house answer the door. When you do, don’t make the mistake of quitting before you do the work. Do not underestimate what the many can do, together.

Dell to sell factories

The reports are Dell may be looking to possibly sell its manufacturing facilities worldwide to contract manufacturers within eighteen months. There’s no joy in such news for those most affected should the reports become reality. However, there is opportunity, also.

As I see it, it is a vindication of E F Schumacher, the late British, world-renown economist. Although an economist himself, Schumacher had no kind words for his brethren and the lofty places they occupy in crafting and shaping government economic policy. He summed up his view of economics as it affects the common man in simple terms in his book, Small is beautiful. The mega-corporations, like Dell, Microsoft, IBM and the like, are not the answer to economic inequality and the enhancement and nurturing of human worth with dignity. The manufacturing floor, he believed, is in total opposition to these human values.

Schumacher’s small, but workable, view of an efficient and effective economics model incorporates the following elements:

· Affordable Any tools or equipment an individual procures to work their trade must be affordable. Purchase of such should not put the individual in debt for much more than the equivalent of an earnings period of , for example, one or two months.

· Small Whatever tools or equipment the individual acquires to earn his/her livelihood should not require any more storage space than one can afford in their own home.

· Creative An individual should be able to find creative expression in what he/she does in earning their livelihood. This creativity is not necessarily of an artistic form, but in the freedom to create one’s day with their family in mind.

Some examples of the above include, a sewing machine, computer/air conditioning technicians’ tools, roofers, satellite dish installers, light automotive and much more.

Now, here’s a scenario.

Suppose a given factory employs 100 builders to assemble computers. The indication by companies outsourcing operations overseas is that model cannot be sustained indefinitely. What Dell may do would not be anything unique. The private manufacturing contractor? That’s just another “mega-corporation” model not unlike the one which just failed. Those affected by a plant shutdown and those who view that plant as their competition are the same who can benefit, _ together.

How many of those 100 individuals with the Knowledge, Skills and Experience in computer assembly in an at-home IE-Network would it take to build systems for a VAR or local independent retailer/reseller, _ as independent contractors? How much would the retailer/reseller’s sales increase were there a small and ever expanding local IE-Network to build custom systems? Although the IE-Network model will launch in Round Rock Texas the model can be easily replicated in Reston Virginia, Schuamburg Illinois, New York City New York and San Angelo Texas.

Small is beautiful.

Another look at the social contract

There are those who define as a social contract the agreement between citizens and their government. According to definition long ago people made the choice to give up individual personal freedom in exchange for the greater, mutual benefit of all. Then, they setup government to keep peace and order. I wonder when it happened that we also took that same social contract and applied it to the employer/employee relationship.

A social contract is not a written document. It is a willful binding of two by mutual agreement for their mutual benefit.

I believe whether you are talking about government or employers the agreement is a mutual one. We may not like it, but it is one we have accepted. It is not forced on anyone. Everyone has an opportunity to work to change it. Everyone has a right to leave it. No one individual has the right to tear down either government or social contract. Yes, there is room for improvement. There are other options besides the traditional, conventional, employer/employee model.

The Independent Enterprise Network model (IE-Network) provides another look at the social contract. There’s nothing to protest or teardown. It’s people who choose to build something of their own for themselves, but not by themselves. Although they may hear their own fears and the doubts from friends and family they do not listen. They move forward.

Before you think about changing your social contract and moving forward here are some things to keep in mind.

· The US government recognizes the right of the individual to act on their own behalf and earn his/her livelihood as an independent contractor.

· The low-cost, low-risk nature of contracting allows the individual to invest their time and energy into his/her service and product cautiously and solidly.

· The IE-Network model social contract is strengthened by the human qualities of creativity, warmth and sharing.

· The IE-Network model, unlike other network marketing businesses, elevates the designer and his/her creativity.

· Networkers partner with retailer/resellers who choose the networker’s products and services for their customers.

· The IE-Network model, unlike the employer’s limited wages, generates constant and increasing income for network members.

Quite often I find people who want to tell me about a friend. Usually, it’s a friend with immense talent and experience. In some instances, they have a great deal of equipment. They have all the resources and desire to give expression to their creative power.

There are, on the other hand, retailers. You and I have seen them come and then they are gone. They are no different than those anonymous friends I’ve mentioned. They have a vision to target a clientele no one else reaches.

The curious thing is, without fail, every time they each learn about the IE-Network model they become excited about the possibilities for realizing their dream. However, nothing changes.

Here’s another definition you’ve probably heard: Insanity is doing the same over and over and expecting different results.

Stop.

California apparel industry and Texas

I have often stated California’s number one position in apparel. Even now, the state’s industry is engaged in new strategies between designers and independent contractors in Los Angeles. These defensive strategies are in response to increasingly high fuel costs and foreign competition. The offensive components of this strategy include; 1.) utilization of an abundant supply of local apparel talent, 2.) quick turnaround on small and large orders not possible with large foreign and domestic manufacturers, and 3.) the development of personal relationships between designers and ICs. Thus far, this has resulted in a bustling apparel economy, despite the struggling overall economy. There may well be displaced workers who would differ with that statement, but the resourceful, innovative approach by the California apparel industry in Los Angeles brings up a question.

WHAT ARE THE LESSONS FOR TEXAS APPAREL?

Again, I have often stated Texas is number one . . . in the number of displaced apparel workers. The previously stated conditions are true and affect the apparel industry in both states. Unlike California, Texas is number one in the nation in exports for eight years in a row. Although the California economy is bigger than the Texas economy Texas continues to distance itself more and more from California in exports. Mexico is Texas’ number one trade partner, with California, again, a distant second. Certainly, Texas does not lag behind with a wealth of apparel resources of its own. The lessons for Texas apparel: 1.) utilize local independent contractor talent, 2.) quick turnaround of product orders from local ICs means nominal or elimination of inventory stockpiling and quick return of investment, too, and 3.) relationships with local ICs are a human interaction valued as much for dignity, idea exchanges and friendship as for product delivery. It bears pointing out IC-Networks are neither employers nor jobs. They are at-home enterprises.

THE IC-NETWORK MODEL

While I could be off on some details I understand the California model involves an individual designer partnering with an “independent contractor” who employs a small group of apparel workers to manufacture apparel items. This is the traditional, conventional model. Moving from such a conventional model to an at-home Independent Contractor Network model involves change. Change is seldom easy. It may be easier when it is thrown at us than when we think, plan, decide and implement it. The idea of change can make us reflect on how “everything’s fine”, “the last time I tried that I failed”, or “I don’t know if that will work” and not about moving forward. The innovative at-home IC-Network model is the Texas model for implementation of these lessons by apparel designers and contractors. The model can be implemented in California or anywhere in the nation where producers (designer/contractor) and buyer (retailer) are found. A network is as big or as small as required to fulfill orders, not just for one buyer, but as many as buyers as partner with the IC-Network. Their income is generated through; 1.) personal productivity, 2.) residual income, and 3.) bonuses. They are not the designer’s or retailer’s employees. They are truly Independent Contractors. Further, network membership options are available for all.

WHAT CAN AN IC-NETWORK ENABLE ME TO DO?

1.) A private label of your own for your, a.) seasonal apparel items, and b.) fashion designs. A favorite question I like to ask when meeting boutique owners, “Do you own your own label?) The answer is, “no”, usually.

2.) Custom-made, or customer-made apparel need not be ceiling price as in the past. Both, contractors and retailers, have cut themselves out this market through their pricing. It is far better to create a product at a marketable price sustained through quality and repeat customers than to sit idly waiting for the next “big” job or sale.

3.) Expand your sales reach to customers and retail clients through your IC-Network partners. If you are a network member and IC-Networkers who produce your apparel are contracted by a retailer to produce your fashion design that’s sales income for you and the IC-Networker without you threading a needle or lifting a finger.

Super-size? No thanks

I receive, and respond to, a steady stream of calls for help from people. They are ready to bring out their creativity on 1) a pattern, 2) make some samples, 3) produce their product, then, 4) bring it to market. The first two steps can be, and are performed by themselves, often. The third step, finding a manufacturer is perhaps their earliest and truest test. Actually, finding a manufacturer, rare as they may be, is not as tough as finding the desired quality at a price that won’t crush the budding enterprise before it even launches. I wish I could say I knew how they did finding a manufacturer, but that is not feedback information I have been provided. One individual had existing connections with a manufacturer she had used in China. She was ready to end that long distance arrangement in favor of a US manufacturer to produce her apparel line. Those oversize apparel producers are the same who have gave birth to the consumer’s adage on apparel choices on the rack: One size fits none.

The information I have copy-pasted below provides some simple, clear arithmetic. This information is nothing new, but I hope it may help some of you appreciate what a local IE-Network is and can do for your business. The US apparel industry has (or did) for many years relied on major big-time manufacturers to produce its apparel. The pressures of cost and price resulted in most, and at this point maybe all, those major manufacturers to go abroad.

However, equally as much a part of the US apparel industry and maybe even bigger than those major manufactures were the thousands of small establishments which contributed to apparel manufacturing. The overwhelming majority of these small establishments employed four or fewer employees. These small establishments were successful and vital to the apparel industry for the immense (and inexpensive) talent they brought to the design and production process.

My question(s):

How many times do you need to multiply by 4 before you have an IE-Network capable of producing your apparel line?

Those 4 workers in small establishments are no less skilled than the hundreds employed by an overseas major apparel manufacturers?

Why then should a local IE-Network be viewed any differently?

What the information below reveals is the apparel industry has long relied on the many, small operations for the bulk of their production. This is not McDonald’s. You may want to super-size your apparel producer, but a small one will work wonders, too. There are, according to the Home Sewing Association, over 40 million people in America who sew at home. The HSA cannot say what the breakdown is between sewing for leisure and sewing for profit.

My take on this as a profitable opportunity for Independent Contractors and Independent Retailer/resellers: It can’t be all that tough to build IE-Networks locally, regionally, statewide and nationwide; beginning in Round Rock Texas. (check out the free burrito!)

Of the approximately 24,000 establishments that produce both apparel and fabricated textile products, nearly two-fifths are establishments with four or fewer employees. More than half these establishments have fewer than 100 but more than 4 employees.

As emerging market countries continue to take on the workload of manufacturing, it is likely this will continue to be an American industry on the decline. Not surprisingly with the continued trend to outsourced jobs outside the U.S., the number of workers engaged in the industry took a very significant decrease in only 5 years. The drop of over 50%, however, is unusually large it appears employment in the industry is now around a quarter million, down from over a half million workers.

This is not an industry with a high concentration at the top. As indicated above, there are still many establishments that employ 5 or fewer workers. The four largest players account for less than 20% of industry revenues while the top 50 represent slightly over 40% of all industry revenues.

Private label

It is heartening and exciting to meet others of like mind. Malissa Long is one such person. I clicked my heels in midair (well, alright! It’s a metaphor. . . but I can do it) when I learned of her decision to offer private label collections to boutiques in Austin. Among the boutiques: Girl Next Door, Adelante, Blackmail, Soigne, Envie, and by George. I do not know of the boutique owners' decision.

I often broach the subject of private label when I meet independent apparel retailers. Three
things come out, typically:

They have thought about it, but it’s too expensive,
They have thought about it, but do not know how to go about it, and,
They have never thought about it.

Malissa is typical of the vast number of individuals talented in apparel in Texas, Virginia, Oregon, Florida, California, Matamoros Mexico. I mention these locations because these are just a few of the places from where this blog receives returning visits. Clearly, people are curious. They want to know how they can utilize and benefit from their KSE as independent contractors in apparel. Malissa is talented in the creation of patterns and is well prepared to tackle the challenges boutique owners see in private label:

They are hard to produce.
They are costly.
The time involved is too much.

Lessons from an Olympic gold medal winner

Everybody's looking for gold! Some lessons from a gold medal winner at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing China.

He, like many competition athletes, did not come to China to have fun. He came to take care of business. The business of sports is competition. The profit/loss business ledger columns of business are the win/loss columns of sports competition where a win is profit and a loss is a loss, still. He came for the gold.

Michael Phelps, the twenty-three year-old from Baltimore Maryland, has forced even the most disinterested to take notice of his remarkable Olympic feat: An unprecedented eight (ocho) gold medals in men’s swimming competition to surpass Mark Spitz' 1972 longstanding record of seven.

We spectators may find it difficult to accept this view of Olympic sports competition. It doesn’t sit well with our romantic, couch view of sports as entertainment. This is not a throw-off on capitalism or competition. It is about a lesson of independence and team work.

I wrote a Spanish post on the "Treasure of the Maquiladoras" ("El Botin de las Maquiladoras") a while back. The point of that post was to illustrate although the maquiladoras (apparel assembly manufacturers, primarily) in south Texas are gone their treasure, their gold, remains. That valuable treasure is the Knowledge, Skills and Experience which remains as the sole intellectual property of the independent former workers who now earn their livlihood at McDonald's, Walmart or the call centers and plastic injection molds which continue to seize the labor-force opportunity left behind in south Texas.

These same individuals possess the capability to team together with local independent apparel retailers; a virtual apparel manufacturer. I receive a regular stream of emails from designers in need of pattern makers and a manufacturer. At least one of them has expressed her desire to discontinue her business with China manufacturers. She has decided to go for the gold in the US, instead. Why are these two, independent individuals and independent designers, apparel retailers, not seizing the valuable treasure in their communities for the creation of their apparel items, their apparel line? They are both looking for gold, but both seem to look past each other.

As impressive as are Michael Phelps’ accomplishments they are a powerful testimony and lesson about trust, confidence and risk. Although he tied the world record when he won seven (siete) gold medals as an individual there was one more. The only race left where he could possibly, and quite likely, win another gold medal was the 4X100 medley relay; _ not as an individual swimmer, but as a team member.

Lest you think, “It’s only a game”, that is not the mindset of competition athletes. The decision by Michael Phelps to play as and be a team member was potentially costly. His image was at risk had the team suffered a loss. However, I believe it was more than just another race for him. It was an golden opportunity to play, compete and win as an American team member. He believed in the capability and willingness of his teammates to take the risk and go for gold together with them.

Take care of business. Go for the gold. Enhance your competitive edge. Build your team. Build your IC-Network.

A logistics perspective on apparel outsourcing

This article clip on apparel is from a logistics perspective. Logistics is all about the chain stretching from order placement, design, materials, manufacturing; to order delivery. Clearly, outsourcing is not the cure-all for ills affecting US apparel retail and manufacturing. Although the setting here is the global stage the issues and their solutions are real for local independent enterprises and independent retailer networks, too.

Strengthening Outsourcing Relationships
Apparel companies' relationships with contract manufacturers in low-cost countries have historically been transient. Deals sometimes last only a few months as brands continuously pursue the lowest cost. On average, one-third to three-quarters of an apparel company's contractor portfolio turns over every year.
But this relationship-hopping comes with a price: poor product quality and contractors who are unwilling to invest in enhancing operations.
"Flitting from contractor to contractor hinders flexibility, hurts quality, and invites social compliance and visibility risk," says David Aquino, research director of the Industry Value Chain Strategies Service at AMR Research, Boston.
Some brands are ameliorating this risk by taking a more strategic approach and pledging longer-term commitments. They're also putting more feet on the ground -- either their own local personnel or in-country logistics or sourcing partners.

They're hoping a rationalization of suppliers and longer-term deals will build the trust required to spur contractors to invest in technology and equipment, boost quality, and prioritize their work.
Apparel companies are also setting up supplier portals to enhance long-distance communications. The most successful companies build global sourcing infrastructure slowly and methodically, rather than rushing in, Aquino says.
"We prefer to stay with the factories we have good relationships with," says Lisa Kuhns, account manager at The S Group, Portland, Ore., which maintains offices in major production countries to offer a local presence to apparel companies lacking the resources to build infrastructure themselves.
"Having strong relationships gives us better negotiating power, and helps hold down prices on behalf of apparel companies," Kuhns says.
In addition, apparel companies are getting more involved in raw materials sourcing, a task previously left to contract manufacturers. It's a strategy designed to shore up quality, which tends to suffer in the move from factory to factory.

Pinpointing New Low-Cost Countries
Rising prices in southern China are driving apparel companies to new low-cost locations throughout Asia, and focus has begun to shift to African and Pacific Island countries. But sourcing from these countries can be risky because they lack apparel production training and infrastructure.
"Critical mass has to build up before large air and ocean carriers can offer fixed-day service out of a new location," says Tom Wyville, vice president of marketing for FMI, a Carteret, N.J.-based 3PL.
It's a challenge to move to less costly, industrialized areas without higher transportation costs wiping out the savings. 3PLs and sourcing partners are helping apparel companies by opening local offices that offer services to hold down logistics costs and provide visibility and quality control. Logistics strategies include blocking out space with air and ocean carriers and operating consolidation centers.
But the number of new sourcing locations is finite. "The world is round, and eventually you come back to where you started," notes Mark Cohen, CEO of Tracy Evans Ltd., an apparel company that has returned to sourcing from Central America after a brief shift to Asia.Smart apparel companies operate multiple supply chains, balancing near-shore with distant sourcing locations, and maintaining reserve capacity to meet unexpected demand.

Grow your business on a weak US dollar

Profits from export sales are up for US corporations like Microsoft, McDonald’s and California wine makers who are taking full advantage of the weak US dollar.

A weak US dollar could present a mutual opportunity for at-home custom-apparel Independent Enterprises (IE) and Mexico (or, US) Specialty buyers.

A weak or slow economy is often seen as being bad for business and not a time for taking a risk. However, you can grow your business on a weak US dollar, too. Specialty products and services often take a back row to the company’s core business until the economy recovers. However, Independent Enterprises and buyers need not rely on high volume to sustain and grow their business even during a down economy.

Because both are among the smallest business units, compared with major manufacturers and mega-chain store retailers, they are best able to change into a surge mode the moment the economy rebounds. While many downsize their operations into a “survive the slump” mode these Independent Enterprises, because they are already “downsized”, don’t need to think or act small. They are forward and progressive thinking about opportunity. Some incoming revenue is better than not at all, but perhaps more important, parties involved are setting themselves to be ready for the economy re-surge.

What could make a partnership between an IE-Network and a custom-apparel Mexico Specialty buyer attractive and grow your business on a weak US dollar?

1. Individual attention to buyer’s client preferences.
2. Network can be as big or as small as buyer wishes.

Lining up to buy fabric from Mexico

They are lining up to buy fabric following the news release by the USTR.

The doors have just opened wide . . . for Central America.

Actually, the international conference call on July 2 by US Trade Representative Scott Quesenberry was to reassure all parties Mexico denim fabric exports to CAFTA member Guatemala will start on August 15. The savings for factory owners range from 30 to 40 percent over US-bought fabric in the past. Of course, as we know there is no longer a textile industry in America to produce the fabric for which apparel producing countries have been starving. Apparel produced in these CAFTA countries using Mexico fabric is than imported into the US duty-free, without quotas, and, _ very cheap.

This raises some questions in my mind. I submitted my question concerning ICs in Texas to the USTR on August 08 and will share their response as soon as I receive it. My question: Is this duty/quota-free denim fabric available to ICs in Texas?

Do fabric retailers, such as Hancock and Jo-Ann have an interest or plan to procure Mexico denim fabric for their customers?
If the cost-savings are so appealing for factory owners are they any less for ICs?
What if a local IE-Network of at-home apparel makers approached the store management to make known their wishes for this fabric?

Actually, this may be an opportunity best seized by an independent Mexico entrepreneur.

What if this fabrics vendor turned right around to place, pickup and purchase custom apparel orders from IC-Networks in Texas for his/her clientele in US or Mexico? Any international import/export issues would be his business to handle, not that of independent contractors.

What if your private label caught the vendor's eye? Are you ready to meet the buyer’s requests?

“No, but sounds like a great idea!”

That was the reaction from an independent apparel retailer in Round Rock to my question: “Is there an association of independent apparel retailers?”

Consider this my invitation to all: If you can enlighten me to the existence of such an association, organization or network to unite independent apparel retailers I would like to know about it. Also, I invite you to view, “CHALLENGES OF THE FUTURE”, a resource by the Illinois Retail Merchants Association.

What effect does the IE-Network have on the unity of independent apparel retailers?

First, unity among IRs means merchandisers and others businesses will see and hear them as a body.
Second, unity ceases to be a mere slogan or wish, but a reality. Independent retailers who unite can exercise their business clout to leverage textile suppliers and retailers on behalf of the IRs’ apparel-makers network.
Third, unity gives IRs a voice in local government.

The link above is the actual text. The five-point text below reflects my red highlights added for emphasis. Here is one portion I highlighted.

Some of the trends affecting retailers discussed in the report are:
1) the increasing amount and intensity of competition;
2) the impact of major demographic changes like the aging of America, the growth of the Hispanic population, and economic clout of the “Y Generation” born 1981-1995 as the largest consumer group in US history;
3) the backlash against chain expansion in smaller communities;
4) the impact of soaring healthcare costs on retail businesses; and
5) the ever-blurring delineations between market segments and buyer groups in the US.

1. The competition is not going away. It is not only from overseas, but across the street, across the street. Increasing sales revenue must come from something more than less expensive procurement. A retailer’s local, private apparel-makers network offers great promise for reducing procurement costs by minimizing or eliminating conventional inventory stockpiling practices.

2. The buyers represented by these demographic groups can best be reached through IE-Network members who themselves, as apparel-makers, both young and old, represent the community demographics. I have heard from so many young girls and young women a mere two, three years out of high school who have great desire and ideas for fashion. What snuffs their creativity is not knowing or being able to partner with independent retailers. Despite their youth many of them have old, conventional paradigms, “I-need-a-lot-of-money-to-start-my-business” mindsets toward getting into the apparel business.

3. Perhaps the best indicator of this backlash is WALMART has committed to taking on the “small business” look in local communities. Whether they achieve that is not so much the point as that they see the value of you of the independent small business.

4. I believe the allusion in this IRMA source is to BIG retail business. Nonetheless, contractors, in the truest sense of the word, represent a way for retailers to continue to build with their former employees Knowledge, Skills and Experience as independent contractors and eliminate healthcare costs.

5. This point is closely related to the first point on the demographics makeup of the community.

What's the advantage of Star Certification for independent contractors?

There are two groups in the private business sector which are the focus of the TSR IE-Network model. They are the individual, private, independent enterprises (IE) of contractors and retailers. Although the primary focus is on at-home apparel makers and computer systems makers the model will extend into other areas to include; automotive, AC installation/repair, cable installation, housecleaning, roofing, satellite dish installation and more. These two sectors, independent contractors and independent retailers, are represented in large numbers throughout America. Despite the great amount and diversity of talent they are often unable to establish and grow their enterprises.

Star certification could make the difference. A Star Certification program for IE-Network members is under development and is expected to be completed by launch of the IE-Network model in Round Rock Texas. Star Certification is a means of reassuring the IC’s private clients, consumers and the IC’s retailer for whom he/she fulfills apparel orders. Overall, Star Certification establishes a standard on par with any other in the market. It is an invitation to the general public to place their trust for quality workmanship and service on independent contractors and independent retailers. The IC can display his/her Star Certification for customers. Customers can view rank (3 star, 2 star and 1 star) and grade level details of the IC's profile for their specific talents as well as customer testimonies.

The Star Certification is structured with 3 ranks and 6 grade levels. These are some of its elements:
· Verification of number of service calls performed within a specified timeframe.
· Verification of service fees associated with those service calls for purposes of determining IC grade level. (For example: Under $50 in a 1 year timeframe would classify as a One Star rank, A4 - A6 grade level; Over $1500 in a 2 year timeframe; Three Star rank, A1 grade level.)
· Verification of experience.
· Verification of education.

The Star Certification will be available for an affordable as yet to-be-determined fee. The program will be conducted through an independent accounting firm. TSR is committed to supporting independent contractors and retailers in the establishment and development of their enterprises through the creation of IE-Networks.

Two Surveys: At-home apparel and computers

There are two surveys posted this weekend. The first one is directed at Information Technology (IT) individuals with Knowledge, Skills and Experience (KSE) in computer and related aspects. The second survey is directed at those individuals with the KSE in apparel.

The purpose of these surveys is to generate data for the benefit of independent retailer/resellers in apparel and computer sales. Certainly, the information would be just as useful for individuals. The data is expected to reflect the range of talent, interest and location of those individuals.

Should anyone be so fortunate as to partner with an independent business to supply their apparel or computer needs that would be great. Everybody is free to do so. However, a partnership, or the creation of networks, between individuals and retailer/resellers would be for the greater benefit of many other individuals with their own wealth resources. Your KSE are your wealth resources. Furthermore, a network, although it is local, initially, expands to regional then state, then nationwide areas. These entrepreneurial opportunities are between enterprises, that is, individuals and retailer/resellers, not employees.

Portrait of an at-home IT talent

Many of us are aware there is an abundance of Information Technology talent in central Texas. A good number of these men and women are employed. Many others have lost or will lose their jobs to outsourcing. Some decide to not seek another employer, but choose instead to cast their luck and venture into their own IT services business. Still others get out ot the field all together and re-enter the job market in an unrelated field or unrelated business of their own.

Marriage and a baby (as some of us know) bring enormous changes and blessings into a relationship and a home. HAL, as we will call it and despite the neuter gender, is a real person rest assured. HAL, in its single days, was sourced as an independent contractor (IC) by out of state clients. Although HAL's engineering degree is in neither computer nor IT related fields, clients tapped his talents.

Now, as the stay-at-home parent with newborn child HAL is extremely please with this circumstance. HAL states there is ample room in the Round Rock TX family financial portfolio for a second income to supplement HAL's spouse's income. I do not believe HAL's situation is unique.

Some of HAL's talents include:

Router setup and installation

High fuel costs are a strong dis-incentive to driving to a second job and is akeen to hiring additional personnel to increase profits. VARs, systems builders, and resellers who leverage IC talent like HAL are smart. Those who tap into an IE-Network of HALs are smarter.

Subscription, Transaction, and Advertising

These are, according to Scott Cohen in, Business Models That Mean Business, the three types of business models in existence. My point is not to argue or dispute the assertion. Rather, I prefer to size the at-home IE-Network (Independent Enterprise Network) model up against this criteria.

The IE-Network model is a subscription-based model for the company. It is a transaction-based model for members as they create and sell their product or service for their clients. Traditional advertising involving the use of media and its expenses is the members' choice.

The IE-Network model is not an Internet business. Although it will have a web presence registration of new members is face-to-face, strictly.

The IE-Network model does not rely on advertising, Often small business can not afford and when they do spend on advertising it is a wild shot. That's not to say there is no advertising, but any advertising expenditures are so minimal as to be negligble. As such, advertising by members is neither required nor expected, though as they are independent they are free to do so if they choose. Advertising is by word of mouth.

This statement by the author is as true as it is powerful of the IE-Network model:

"So, rather than attempt to change the behavior of our entire target audience or impose a "transaction" model on an inappropriate market, we created a platform that facilitated the deal-making process while still providing value and a scaleable, recurring revenue stream."

Specifically, the IE-Network model:

Facilitates - the process of procurement of products or services by retailer/reseller clients through a local network of Independent Contractors (Enterprises).

Value - is in the production of Customer-Made products by IE-Networks for the retailer/reseller clients

Scaleable - inventory for the retailer/reseller means stockpile inventory reduction or elimination as well as the flexibility to affect quick changes as needed or desired.

Revenue - flows in three different forms for members; personal productivity, recurring (residual), and bonuses.

Clearly, the IE-Network model is a business system. A business system generates revenue increasingly whether you are in the shop or out shopping. Membership in IE-Networks is open to all, whether independent contractors or retailers/resellers.

Initially, the at-home IE-Network model will launch in the areas of apparel and computer systems builder. Members need not be familiar or have knowledge of a prospective member's area of expertise to register them in the IE-Network system.

Furthermore, IE-Network members can excercise their option to operate their business system for the residual income and bonuses it can generate without themselves being involved in production of products or services.

Compensation for registration of new members is absolutely prohibited by the company, state and federal law.

The focus of my pursuit

One of my early mentors a few years ago would hit me with questions about my business model. It was always with the softening words, "I don't want to discourage you." I would assure him there was not much he could ask which I had not been asked or had not thought about, already. Regardless of the spirit or intent with which friends (and others) ask their questions I always welcome these as the teachable moment.

So, I was neither hurt, offended nor surprised when a friend suggested I might focus on an at-home job, because "that business of yours" is just too diverse. "You're trying to tackle too many things."

I agreed; _ on the part about my business. What's more although I agreed with him I stated the focus of my pursuit has not been in finding a "good job", even if it is at home, but in creating a business model where the individual can utilize his own knowledge, skills and experience to generate his own income.

I do not doubt some of you readers have yet to feel you understand what the IE-Network model is, how it works and how it can earn you money. Some of that may be my inability to communicate my message clearly. Then, of course, this has been a long-running monologue with me don't the "talking." Some of it may be because you, the interested readers, may be focused on the wrong thing. Let me illustrate through the following analogy how we immerse ourselves in environments so diverse it would scare us away were we to focus on the wrong thing.

Diversity of IE-Networks

First, let me reiterate some of what makes up IE-Networks. Independent Enterprise Networks can include members from very diverse backgrounds and interests. An IE-Network member may bring other contractors which may include at-home apparel makers, computer systems builders, roofers, satellite dish installers. What they all share in common is the IE-Network model which enables a business system which generates income for them, _ increasingly. Does the IE-Network member who brings them into his/her network necessarily need to know about all these different fields? NO.

A diverse workplace environment

Now, lets suppose you applied for and accepted the $10/hr position as computer builder at XYZ, Inc., a computer manufacturer. As you enter the XYZ workplace facility you meet some of your new associates. You soon learn are immersed in a very diverse environment with housekeeping personnel, software engineers, mechanical engineers, materials handlers, boxers, shippers, forklift operators. These are just a few individuals you happen to greet, but you realize there are so many more. Are you or XYZ management troubled that you know nothing about software or shipping? NO. You both understand as long as you keep your focus on computer building your contribution to the XYZ operations will be much appreciated and valued.

Who compensates you

Aside of these interpersonal relationships I wonder how many people would know the president of XYZ. How many people can explain, while looking at their check stub, a complete breakdown of their pay; what is FICA, Medicare, etc.? That does not prevent them from receiving their paycheck or spending it. It's not a mystery.

A key difference between XYZ, Inc. and IE-Networks is how the individual is compensated. XYZ management will call you in once a year and you will be informed IF you will be rewarded with a pay raise. IE-Network members determine for themselves where, how fast and how much compensation they want to see their network generate for them. That, too, is a matter of focus you alone must determine and maintain. Like the XYZ employee, you may not know whose network you are a part, or every person who is coming into your network, but that doesn't keep you from receiving your compensation and enjoying it. It's not a mystery.

A System that Works for your Business

I've just discovered Robin Robins. I've been reading and listening to Robin Robins.

If you are a VAR or IT consultant who's being reading my blog I want to urge you to listen to her. She has an wealth of information on her website and through a free CD (which I ordered), also. Robin's got an unfaltering steady, perfect delivery that makes for easy (but definitely not lulling) listen.

Although I am neither a VAR nor IT I can see she has masterminded a system for these business enitities. Robin's Technology Marketing Toolkit System comes with a guarantee. You can't go wrong. I do not want to risk either overstating or mis-stating her claims. I refer you to her website.

I heartily concur with Robin on her unrelenting emphasis on the importance of having a system
for your business. That ought to ring familiar with you, dear readers, because the IE-Network model is a system that works for your business and that enables you, either VAR or IT, (as well as apparel makers) to replicate yourself or your business organization. The IE-Network model is founded on two corporate principles: Leveraging tax law and creating alliances.

The answer to the question between how much you make and how much you keep is
determined by how well you leverage tax law to your advantage. Although you do not need an alliance, or network, to leverage tax law effectively, it is the system you need to get into business for yourself, but not by yourself.

The IE-Network model is not just a social club, card-holder-hangout for members. IE-Networks generate income and bonuses for members once the system is created whether or not you, the network member, are at the office or on the beach. Those of you who have worked in manufacturing are familiar with ISO. It is the more common "acronym" for IOS; International Organization for Standardization. So, you see "ISO" is not an acronym, really. It is the Greek word meaning, "equal".

The reason network members understand and follow the development of their their business system with one another's success in mind is because the network makes them, "ISO", that is, "equal". Each network member determines for themselves how big, how quickly, where, how far and how much income their network produces for them. This concept of equality may be a buzz word in the corporate world, but the reality on the manufacturing floor is simply not there. As always, my point is not to tear down that traditional model. I do want to point out that is what many, or most, of us have accepted and continue to believe is the only way to provide for our families livelihood.

It's time individuals come together for their common prosperity. It's time to direct resources to those businesses, such as midmarket companies, who do not have the financial resources of bigger companies to battle issues which affect productivity. IC-Networks are the best system, the best tool to equalize all things for all concerned.

Clearing Up Independence Daze

We have two independence days in America. We don't even recognize one. The other we celebrate. The first occurs some time past mid-May. It is regarded as Independence Day as that is the point at which the average American taxpayer has fulfilled his tax obligation to Uncle Sam. That is, almost half the year you work for the government. The other Independence Day we celebrate is the fourth of July. It is enough to throw one into an independence daze.

When King George's new world subjects rebelled against the English throne it was to free themselves of a type of government whose oppressive deeds had reached a boiling point, finally.

Golden cuffs

Today, we Americans celebrate our independence from England and King George. Americans do not live in shackles or under occupation by a foreign government. Independence Day is a day of rest, parades, picnics and family. Others may wonder whether their freedom and independence is a myth, not a reality, only.

Ironically, American freedom and independence which gave rise to free enterprise economy and capitalism has become subservient to it. Americans exchanged their values of freedom and independence in return for a job, then pay raises, then benefits, bonuses, profit-share. These "golden cuffs" became a source of boastful pride among "cuffed" employees with the intended effect that no one in their right mind would want to leave (or could leave?) such job security. Lest anyone forget who calls the shots; it's the company, still.

Reclaim your freedom and independence

When is it time to rise up and reclaim your freedom and independence? What are the indicators it is time for action? Rising food prices? Rising fuel costs? Job outsourcing, colossal debacles (think Enron, Bear Stearns) brought on as the result of greed and incompetence? Is the pot boiling?

Employed, underemployed and unemployed workers take stock of your resources. These resources are your Knowledge, Skills and Experience. You have been endowed by the Creator with these unalienable resources. That's what enabled you and your fellow workers to take your employer to the competitive edge. KSE is the wealth resources, the collateral to utilize in the launch of your independent contractor (IC) service and begin reclaiming your freedom and independence.

A short lesson from history

Learn a short lesson from the colonialists. It was not one, but a mass of individuals who rose up together against King George's excessive taxes for a common cause; a common good. Ultimately, their revolt resulted in their independence and a constitution framed by our Founding Fathers with care and wisdom. Our Founding Fathers did not intend to deny powers of taxation in the new nation, but that such taxation would not be excessive. Today, the call to action and independence is neither to destroy your brother's property nor to shed blood, but to act for the common good of one another. It is a praiseworthy, biblical admonition.

The important point to take from this is the significance and effect of taxes on your family. It is not how much money you earn. It is how much you keep. How well you leverage tax law to your advantage will determine how much or your earnings you keep for your family.

Yearn to be free

Apparel makers, computer systems builders, floor maintenance, landscaping, roofing, automotive, house painting, satellite dish installation, AC installation and repair, Do-It-Yourself (DIY). These individuals, some categorized by the federal government as being between "non to low-skilled" in fact possess a great deal of KSE. They frequent Home Depot, Goodwill, Lowes, Directron, Fry's, Radio Shack, and any place where they can get what they need to do the job whether for self or others for charity or profit. Some, as in the computer (IT) field, networking, sofware engineering, are highly specialized. All engage in a common effort in their respective work environments to perform a job for their employer. They all yearn to be free. Some are just caught up in an independence daze about how to go about it.

A network of United States

Who said you and your fellow workers can't perform as independent contractors those same functions for your own clients as a network?

There are clients including individuals, small business and startups who would welcome a powerful effective, efficient network to keep their costs down, gain the competitive edge on domestic and foreign business. A network may be their best force against domestic companies who now compete with them from their offshore perch. The United States of America is a union of fifty states bound together for their common good. How do we all coexistent and function together? We are, by any other word, a "network" of states bound, by ideology, to live and work together.

How do you and others with your KSE come together to unite for your common good? You network together. As a networker you are in business for yourself, but not by yourself. A network that generates income in three different forms (personal, residual and bonus) is not just a social club or a hang out for buddies. It is a network, not unlike our United States of America, open to all the above, apparel makers, roofers, etc. because it is in your interest that each one succeeds. The success of one is the success of the other. This is free enterprise. This is capitalism.

The pot is boiling. Next layoff think of it as a clearing up of independence daze when you decide to create your own IC-Network for you and your family's future.

A driving analogy

Everyday Americans of various employ jump into their cars. They make they navigate streets
and highways. They drive high speeds behind, alongside and ahead of other motorists. Outwardly, some of them may drive the exact same vehicle as you. However, that enlightens
you neither to the car's features nor the driver's habits. The peculiar thing is you do not know those motorists, their driving skills or where they work. The amazing thing about it is how well it works! Accidents are not the norm. They are the exception. It is in everyone's interest to excercise every human psychological, physical, mental, spiritual and legal, resource to make this volatile, mobil feat work. It's not rocket science. Failure is not an option.

IE-Networks are not impossible. They are innovative.

What drives Independent Enterprise Networks? People who as employees, acquired, amassed and developed the Knowledge, Skills and Experience (KSE) and drove their employers to the competitive edge. This KSE, or wealth resource as diverse as the many cars on the road, is the property of and for the use of Independent Contractors (individuals) and Retailers/Resellers (businesses). They are not all contractors, but they are all enterprises, hence, the IE-Network moniker.

You may know everyone in a network of two, but a network of ever increasing and diverse resources (KSE) poses as daunting a task as knowing every motorist on the road. Ironically, our current economy has a driving affect on two things: Rising fuel costs for motorists and an increasing appeal for an economic IE-Network model. It raises the question: What am I driving?

No one can predict what the dynamic life of an IE-Network will look like, but can it work? ABSOULTELY! Lets drive!

IE-Networks and Americans, immigration and economy

A profitable at-home network, not government or employment in the private sector, affects the immigration and economic status of Hispanics in America. The target of this network represents a response within the larger context of displaced apparel manufacturing American workers of which, it is safe to say, the greater percentage are Hispanic. Simultaneously, this response, by extension, provides a real, living, human, national response towards people, not just issues of immigration and economy.

A woman, in her 40s, single, with children, monolingual spanish-speaking Hispanic, displaced apparel manufacturing worker with a primary education is the at-home target. However, there are thousands of displaced workers like her who possess a wealth of resources capable of producing a positive impact on their immigration and/or economic status. These are resources acquired over the years of employment; the Knowledge, Skills and Experience (KSE) best utilized through IC-Networks (Independent Contractor Networks) to produce affordable, at-home, custom and regular apparel for their own private clients or local independent apparel retailers.

As at-home independent contractors (not employees) their legal or illegal immigration status represents neither a legal risk for retailers nor a threat for job-seeking Americans.

Conversely, their contribution makes for a significant impact towards strengthening the US economy.

The following is derived from a conversation with a business friend. It illustrates how the network, as a pragmatic alternative, can affect the lives of these individuals, their families and independent apparel businesses, significantly.

An independent retailer purchases from a merchandiser an elegant dress for sixty dollars. After the resale the retailer pockets a twenty dollar profit. However, a retailer who takes from 30 to 50 of that 60 dollar investment and partners with an at-home, local IC-Network has made an business inventory savings and increased the entrepreneur's bank account. Furthermore, IC-Network (or Independent Enterprise-Networks) membership is open to contractor and retailer enterprises, alike. Networks represent the potential for three forms of revenue generation: Personal productivity and sale plus residual income and bonuses paid by the network parent company.

A few weeks ago a friend of mine modeled the IE-Network model, unwittingly.

After a period of some time his son had purchased every component necessary to build his new beast machine. It was time to call in an expert. It was time to call his dad.

My friend then traveled a few hundred miles to visit with his son and his family over the weekend. Some time during the weekend they gathered the components in the living room, kitchen or garage and built a fine machine.

Cost? Whatever the son paid for the components. Dad was quite pleased, I expect, to see his grand kids.

Lets tweak that scenario a bit.

Someone; a friend, neighbor or relative, would like to own a computer. However, even the low price of $400 we are begining to see is a bit more than they can put out-of-pocket, comfortably. You, as an IE-Networker, advise him/her where they can purchase a motherboard. The following month a power supply and hard drive. Next month, the case and memory until they have purchase all the necessary components. Next, he/she calls you or drops by to set a time when you can build the system for the agreed upon fee; for profit.

Whatever the total cost of components (even were they to be a bit over the least expensive system in retail) and your fee he/she is able to fit it into their regular living expenses. You build the system. Service may be handled either by the parts retailer or yourself, again, for a fee and time managable by your neighbor, friend or relative.

The IE-Network at-home model works the same whether you produce apparel for a local dress boutiques or build computers for a reseller, or your own clients.

One Dress, One Computer at a Time

There are workers in several industries hit hard, one at a time, in America by the corporate practice of overseas outsourcing, incompetence and other factors. Among these is the apparel industry. Right along with apparel is the computer and IT industry, in general. Apparel holds the longer track record of the two and what transpires once these jobs leave our communities. There's one thing the computer industry and IT can learn from the apparel industry: Those jobs are not coming back.

There is opportunity, here.

Workers in the apparel and computer fields, respectively, have acquired, and in some instances, amassed a great deal of Knowledge, Skills and Experience (KSE). What many do not realize is they can utilize these KSE resources as entrepreneurs generating an income for their families. Furthermore, many mistakingly believe being self-employed or having a business of their own requires sums of money they do not have to open a shop. I would not advise either of them to leave their new jobs whether at McDonald's, Walmart or other place of employment. I will urge both to consider the potential dynamic of Independent Contractor-Networks. (IC-Networks)

The IC-Network model enables indviduals and retailers to build their businesses mutually, successfully, locally, regionally, statewide and nationwide. Apparel boutique and VAR (Value-Added Resellers) owners continue to struggle to increase sales and service revenues. The reason: If they are not sole individuals trying to do it all themselves they are small business employers who cannot afford to hire the additional workers to boost their revenues. Their business model can only carry them so far. Where major corporations will outsource; boutique and VAR owners shutdown.

The outsourcing of apparel and computer jobs overseas has left in its wake an enormous talent pool; people with the KSE to meet the needs of local boutique and VAR owners.

What is the difference between an upscale dress at Neiman-Marcus and one at a local boutique? Other then price and location: None. My point is the employee whose KSE produced the Neiman-Marcus dress on the production floor is the same person capable of producing the same for the boutique owner. Boutique owners can provide and build relationships with customers for whom corporate conventional mass production has given one option as consumers: One size fits none.

What is the difference between a name-brand computer and a whitebox / whitebook? Other than price and localtion: None. When Dell sized the whitebox market at 3 billion dollars it pretty much remained unchanged when Dell got out of it a couple years later. Who makes up that 3 billion dollar market as yet unpenetrated by the Acers, Dells, HPs and Lenovos? They are the low-income, Blacks and Hispanics who do not own a computer. They industry has moved on to pursue the current hot item: Laptops. I do not expect those who could not afford a desktop to race to their local retailer for their laptop.

No single boutique or VAR owner can rival the mega corporation's local chainstore. However, a local IC-Network can greatly increase the efficiency and productivity of their business with one dress, one computer at a time.

The IC-Network model targets other industries which lend themselves to independent contracting. The model will launch locally (in Round Rock, Texas) and expand regionally, statewide and nationwide. It represents promise and hope for our families, comuunities and country.

The debacling effects of debt

Americans, particularly those who have experienced the burden of debt, hear much about their lack of discipline and restraint and the consequences of debt. I do not think most people in debt have much to offer by way of an argument to justify their financial straits, meager wages and cost of living, notwithstanding.

We Americans hear of our government's debt and Washington's lack of discipline and restraint. Although there are abundant indicators of the seriousness of our problem, the bottom line is the course remains the same. Both political parties spend like there's no tomorrow whether for a war or social programs. Basicly, spending with promise of progress, but little or no profit, that is, there is no substantive change. Whatever "savings" are made on one side are spent multiple times over on the other side.

American business has, for years, been touted, even in the Sunday morning Bible class, for its discipline, exactness and efficiency. Alas, the steady stream of American business debacles in recent years and weeks, whether through greed or incompetence, shows no signs of letting up. Whether the debacle resulted in loss of financial investment or jobs there are real people who suffer the consequences.

I am neither the son of an economist nor an economist. I am heartend by E.F. Schumacher, the late world-renown British economist who had no kind words for his brethren in, Small is Beautiful. I do not profess a quantifiable understanding of the discipline. Yet, when the devastating effects of debt are all around us we begin to see the many faces of debt.

Remember Michael Milken the junk bond dealer of the seventies? The short story of what Milken did was he made access to big money, easy. Ted Turner was quick to seize the opportunity. He had some crazy notion about cable and was willing (and there were those who were willing to front the capital) to take on an unprecendented, history-making billion dollar debt to start up his company; a first in America. Then came IPOs and everyone who was looking for the fastest way to make a lot of money fast, found their heart's delight in many a corporation eager for their money.

Corporations do not call this debt. They call it, "shareholders". However, if you are using other people's money to finance your business in the form of stock, isn't that a loan of sorts? And, if it is a loan does it not make sense to pay it back as soon as possible once your family is financially comfortable, that is, pay back those shareholders? It is this "shareholders-as-creditors" that effectively shackle companies as to what and when they will do anything. As long as those shares are outstanding they are a loan to be serviced. The longer it goes without being cleared off the books it remains a liability to the company even as the company continues to earn profits which enable it to clear the debt.

This ought not be construed as anti-capitalism or some form of socialism. The problem is not with leveraging shareholders' money in a business startup. The problem is in sustaining that business with shareholder money. The effects of corporate sustaining this debt becomes evident sooner or later. Coincidentally, along with the effects comes the latent greed or incompetence, also. There's no mistaking, between shareholders and employees, who makes money for the company and who makes money from the company. Similarly, there's no mistaking which one, greed or incompetence, has played out on a man, a woman's, a family's financial investments or jobs in the aftermath of the debacling effects of debt in corporate America.
